Just bought a 300 tdi auto with EDC fitted 150k full service history with can belt changed at 120 K

Bought ,non running with suspected cam belt failure , (too good to scrap)but on returning home , turning crank and checking the tappets all appears in order .

As car been stood 18 months fitted new battery and cranked but will not start , got fuel at injectors and removed injectors and appear to have compression when cranked

Engine check light is on !! any ideas , throttle pedal ? ecu ,engine speed sensors , pump ?whats the favourite ?
is only option putting on diagnostic machine

Can you re set ecu , where is the the diagnostic socket

all advice greatfully received

was advertised as such , but bloke didnt realy know got car via another chap

Engine cranks and pumps fuel and appears to have compression ( without testing) but engine' fault light' is on
'
will normal code reader give 'land rover codes or does it need land rover dedicated equipment?

Dont know about code reader but I'd have a close look at the immobiliser ;)

car is EDC so doesent have the known faulty spider unit , would have thought if it was an imobiliser problem , it would't crank or inject diesel ? or am i wrong

Get the inspection cover off the timing cover and turn the engine over clockwise on the crankshaft bolt - if the pump pulley inside the timing case is turning - your cambelt hasn't broke ;)

Ah EDC is a different beast.

Is there an immobiliser?? And your right IF the immobilser is working it wont crank however......

I have a TD5 immobilzer that would switch off power to the ECU all by it's self but it hadn't immobilised...... erm ok it effectively had immobilsed the vehicle but the engine would still crank, fire and run just as long as you held the ignition on. ;)

It might not be the same but it may be worth a look ;)

if yer getting fuel at the injectors whilst cranking surely it should start whatever the immobiliser is or isnt doing .
sounds to me like it broke the cambelt , has been done but theyve got the timing wrong?

Plot thickens , i find evidence that the car has a recent head gasket and there is evidence of the head previously getting hot as the temp sensor in the middle of the head has partially melted and the wires to the sensor are a bit brittle , tested the sensor for resistance and is giving readings when dipped in hot water and the wire in part does not appear open circuit but may have to test further down the length to check

From what i can establish the ECU reads crank speed and water temp to allow to start , going to replace the sender and investigate the crank sensor , presume it close to the flywheel? ...anybody changed one ?

Have read also there may be problems with broken wires when the head is removed ?

engine check light still on .. will this have to be cleared first to allow to start ?

just an update , turns out to be a few problems , some bigger than others ,Engine check light was on due to a pump sensor on no 4 injector being open circuit , replaced and engine light now out , but still would not start , decided to check compression , had readings of 270,100,50 and 400 psi clearly big problems !!.

Removed the head found gasket leaking and 0.6mm warp accross the width of the head .... clearly been red hot again since head gasket had been replaced, top of pistons also damaged . another head obtained , skimmed and pressure tested, sump off , 4 new pistons and big ends now fitted just on with re- assembly .. just hope it starts ........... is it worth it ,,,,,, i hope so ........
