hi guys,
as you know I had an independent fit me a new viscous coupling and VC bearings yesterday..
today when slowing down I noticed a kind of whiring sound, deeper than a wheel bearing noise...mostly noticeable when I'm rolling to a stop from 20mph...also I'm sure I can sense a slight vibration in the car when doing 60.

is there any adjustment needed when fitting a VC?
I would have thought any slight misalignment etc would have been taken up by the UJ's on the VC props?

help!!

I believe that it's essential that the support bearings are fitted at 90 deg to the shaft when pressed on although I'm not certain how difficult it is to get that wrong as I wasn't present when mine were fitted.
Is it a a brand new VCU or a recon unit , if recon who's ?
Also are the bearings genuine OE or pattern ones? Several owners who have used the latter have reported problems with them either immediatly or very soon afterwards , I used genuine items after reading up on it .
Try a search .

It could be the support bearings, where did you get the unit from? You had a lot of work done, so it may not be the VCU.

Well the VC was a new unit at £370, the support bearings cost me £68.84 each so im guessing they are not a cheap set?..
I think im being pedantic about the slight vibration at 60...im more concerend about the droning/whiting sound when slowing down which is most noticeable at 30mph.

Maybe taking off an almost sized vcu and replacing a new one has now let the drive train slacken up a little and im noticing new noises?

austen, I have my old unit on the bench in my workshop - did you say you were interested in it?

I hope im not looking at an IRD/Diff problem...

so the bearings are OEM LR parts? I assume the VCU is new and came with a damper at that price? If so that rules out cheap chinese bearings, rubbish badly balanced cheap dampers (as sold on ebay) and VCU (can't say i've heard of of a bad new vcu). The bearings could have been damaged being put on the VCU. Check the front prop to IRD CV joint and boot, its very easy to damage this joint when removing the prop.

If that all checks out then another suspect is that the rear diff pinion isn't shimmed correctly. There is no need to remove the shim when replacing the seal, but if they did and replaced it they may have and not shimmed it correctly or if they didn't replace it when reassembling they over tighten the bolt and crushed the shim too much or they haven't tightened it up enough. This kind of thing shows up as the noise you describe.

I doubt it is the IRD if it was fine before hand,a looser VCU gets rid of noise.

Have you replaced any tyres??

Yes i'll have you old VCU if its got a damper

To be honest I havent got under it since i got it back, all the tyres were 3mm so when i got it back and heard the drone i put on 4 brand new michelin latitude cross tyres..still got the drone with no improvement.
Yes the oil seal was replaced but i dont know if they replaced the shims etc-im guessing they should have just re-torqued the bolt after putting a new oil seal in.
i'll give the garage a call this morning, they will probably say bring it straight back to have a check as they are fairly reputable (yes..a trustworthy garage!)
with OEM bearings, are there any visible differences to cheap bearings? I can have an eyeball when im under to make sure.

Im sure they get the vcu and bearings from Ashcroft..will check that too though.
I tried a few tests this morning, reversing on full lock still feels like the truck has its brakes on the back but i know that this is a characteristic of this drive train..
I'll check the CV boot and props for play at lunchtime, and make sure the new VCU has a damper.... and the call the garage.

Thanks for your continued support all,

Bearings in the photo's below are genuine LR. Paid £61.50+vat for them a year ago (inc 10% discount).

well took it back today - they said due to oil leaking past new oil seal in my diff coupled with a wining noise from transmission somewhere with slight vibration I may just need a new collapsable spacer in my rear diff nose pinion thingy..
Taking it back Friday to get the new spacer fitted and torqued up - will i do much harm driving it around before then...just got a small vibration and whinig noise at minute but dont wanna foobar my new vcu or existing IRD!

There is a chance that the leak on the nose is being caused by the input bearing being worn. You won't knacker vcu or IRD but if the pinion and crownwheel aren't shimmed correcly it will be wearing the diff out. probably ok to use for a few miles but don't go using it for weeks. If the bearing has gone in the nose of the diff you would be better off having the entire diff rebuilt

Its in on Thrusday for a look, im only doing about 75miles before then so shouldnt be too much wear by then im hoping.
It was super quiet and only a drizzle out of the front of the diff before i had the VC changed...but as the rear prop was off i told them to change the nose oil seal while it was apart....wish I hadn't touched the seal now...all this whining and droning, as well as a leak worse than i had before!

Fingers crossed the new collapsible spacer works and the correct pre-load is put back on the diff...I can't afford a rebuild at the mo after having spent £1800 on the truck recently in servicing and repairs!....

Is the bearing changeable from the front nose without taking diff out and apart?

If they are changing the shim washer i would expect them to remove the diff if they are doing the job properly, there is no way you can torque them up correctly with the diff hanging by the rubber mounts. Maybe thats what they did last time and its not tight enough????

One thing from my training days.......fit a new collapsible spacer when fitting a new pinion oil seal.

Looks like they have and now realise they've messed up. I wouldn't have drove it until it's fixed in case of damage to the pinion bearings

Ok, had another oil seal fitted today along with the spacer...the noise i was hearing is still there but a lot quieter. The thing is another noise has been introduced - but i think both of the whining/wob wob wob bearing type noises are coming from the front of the cars transmission.
Maybe its possible the new VC I had is faulty? Can that happen! It was from Ashcroft I believe but dont quote me on that.

The thing is, ever since the work I’m getting a whining bearing noise from the front somewhere whenever I take my foot off the accelerator, and also slowing down at around 20mph more noticeably. I’m not having any symptoms of crunching or grinding going round corners etc – it just sounds like bearing noise, a whine combined with a wob wob wob relatively pitched to the speed I’m doing.

thanks
