Help!!!! Advise needed! Knocking noise still persists after diff mount replacement!

For the past month or so my Freelander 1.8 has been making a sort of clunking/banging noise when, changing gear, (most noticeable going into reverse or between 1st and 2nd), driving aggressively, or going over really rough terrain. The noise seems to be coming from the rear drivers side as far as I can tell, after reading some posts and other info online I believed it to be a fault with the rear centre diff mount. Having picked one up from a LR dealer today I went ahead and fitted it, annoyingly having to remove prop and various bits to wiggle the old one out of position, while under I checked the other rear diff mount which are the orange polyurethane kind that have obviously been replaced by the previous owner, they seemed to have no issues so went ahead and replaced just the centre one which oddly enough was a stock part not matching the others. Now after taking the car for a drive the problem is still persisting and I literally now have no clue what it could be ! Someone help please, I'm new to this site so sorry if this is all a bit wordy ! Appreciate any suggestion from you guys ! Brandon :confused:
 
Rear offside subframe not uncommon issue on pre 2003. Get your welder out there is a thread here that has a land rover directive with diagram just cant remember where.

as the others guys have said , plus have u got access to a jet wash as it might be easier to blast any crud off first so when u get underneath will be easier to see

plus see ur just up the road from me , hope u get on ok mate

I had this noise since I bought mine.

Removed rear subframe and mounts are great and it's tightly mounted
New vcu
Vcu bushes
Rear diff mounts
Front drivers driveshaft
New anti roll bar drop links
Bottom ball joints
New tyres
Front calipers/brake over hall
Rear brake overhall

And it still makes the same noise. I'm tempted to say its actually meant to make a clunk/creak noise

Or unless it breaks I'm not spending more time and money searching for this problem
 
Have you looked at the vcu mounting bearings? Not just the bearings though, check the rubber surrounds that hold the bearings, these get knackered and allow the whole vcu to move. I proved this on mine by laying at the drivers side and placing a foot on the side of the vcu, and pushing sideways a few times. If they're faulty you may even hear and feel the bearings banging on the side of the bearing holder as I could with mine.
 
Your description of the noise and its position is classic R/H sub frame there are two causes one is movement between the tube cross member and the jacking point on the rear subframe easily fixed small welding job,
Or secondly and more seriously if your vin no: is before 2A219766 the right hand rear longitudinal can be fractured,
The list of work you have all ready done suggests that this would be the next place to look
 
I had the same noise, after having a good look at all the usual problems from a hippo, I found that the exhaust had come off the passenger side rear mounting, and on the drivers side it had moved across that much the exhaust was hitting the bumper, everytime I hit a bump it clonked!
