I've recently returned to Land Rover ownership after about 12 years without one. Can't believe how I managed!

You'll probably see quite a few questions from me in the next few weeks; our Discovery dropped its transfer box yesterday afternoon . As we had a planned trip away with the caravan coming up this Thursday, and not having any workshop space or time, it's been taken to the garage to get sorted. Anyway, for reasons I'll not bore you with, we couldn't (or more correctly wouldn't) cancel our trip and so needed a tow car fast.

Last night I stumbled upon a nice tidy '81 X plated 109" CSW. I really could not believe my luck, I was on the way to look at a replacement/spare Disco, (older than ours and with a bit too much "Off Road" gear for my tastes, I try not to draw too much attention to myself generally!)

The only thing that bothers me is that it's a 2 1/4 petrol engine. Nothing against the engine but I've only had diesels (of any make) for the last how ever many years. It does have quite a lot of (recent) service history, but is there anything I should look out for other than general routine maintenance. Also if and when I do get stuck whilst geing it to how I want it, I hope this will be the place to come to ask for help.

I'll try and get some photos up next week and let you all know how the tour goes.

Thanks for the words of welcome.

Picked the Landy up tonight after managing to get a very helpful local insurance broker to give me a cover note on my new Classic Car policy so I could tax it without relying on Royal Mail (And I always thought Norwich Union were expensive).

It drives as I seem to remember thinking they should, lots of vibes and rattles but no clunks or knocks. Still feels a bit like hard work after being spoilt by poncy Disco but I'll soon get back into the swing of it !!

Tomorrow It's an early start, new oil, plugs & filters etc, then the joy of tracing the reason why the near side headlight works, but only most of the time. My guess is the famous dodgy earth on the slam panel. Also new towbar wiring to do; lights and brake lights but no indicators. Again I'm guessing it'll be dodgy earths or just a load of c**p thrown up in the rear arch!

Time permitting I want to replace the radio cassette with my CD player that I had in my Transit van too, but we will see, probably won't be able to hear it anyway .

So much to do & so little time, am I the only person that ends up in this sort of situation a day before an outing? Anyway off to Otley Festival on Thursday for the weekend and then to Robin Hood's Bay for most of next week. Will post photos when we get back.

That wasn't necessarily aimed at you Grunter. But since you've owned-up to being a collector of lawnmowers, I really do believe you when you say you live in yer shed
