Hi Guys,
I brought a Freelander (diesel) a few months ago and it is losing water. There are no other symptons to indicate that the head gasket has gone but it has me and my local garage stumped. We have pressure tested it and changed the rad but is still losing it. I've been quoted nearly £1000 to change the head gasket! This seems rather high.
Firstly, does anyone have any ideas what it could be? Secondly, is £1000 actually correct for changing a head gasket?
It's a 2000 plate with about 100k on the clock so it's had some use.

Thanks,

John.

they are taking the **** have you changed radiator cap

Yes I have and I've done all the usual; pressure test etc but everything checks out. It seems to lose a small amount of water when hot. I have noticed cracking on the filler bottle. I'm going to try replacing that because I wonder if when hot these tiny fractures are enough to let stem out.
