Hello...... & Help please.....

Hello all,

I bought my first Defender about 6 weeks ago (Wished I'd purchased one 10 years ago now tho) and absolutely lovin it. I owned a Freelander before and as fun as it was, it just didn't' have the load capacity or off road ability I needed. Hence the 110

Shes a 110 CSW, TD5, 2002.

She had loads of extras already added (protection stuff, uprated suspension, front bars, winter kit & roof rack.....) so when I saw it It was love at first sight.

I do have a couple of questions tho.....

1. The indicators don't auto cancel, Is this a common issue? I havn't taken the wheel off yet.

2. the Front heated windscreen fuse keeps blowing but not after every use. I've checked the wiring under the body/chassis for damage and this all appears fine, oddly enough the trailer light pops on from time to time, although I've done no towing.... could these oddities be linked??

3. I seem to experience an odd vibration when using light to no gas in forth & fifth gear. The gear oil has recently been changed as it had a full service before I purchased her. The sound also goes away the moment I drop the clutch. It feels like I'm driving over those annoying raised yellow speed control lines if that explains it in any way. Apart from this she drives like a dream (a very bouncy dream )

4. Final question... I need to fit an additional battery but I'm not sure where the best place to fit this is. I know loads of other people have this setup so I'm wondering where the prefered place is on a 110 CSW.

Can't help much, 2002's a bit new for me.

If it's the same as my '89 90 there is a cam beneath the steering wheel which should trip the indicator lever to the off position, try taking the wheel off and have a look.

Heated windscreens! Bloody luxury, when I were a lad..........

Why are you in fourth and fifth with "light to no gas". It will vibrate if your in too high a gear with low revs.

1. yes the indicator stalk self canceling unit eventuly gets worn and the stalk needs replacing, did mine at the beginning of the year as it also had a full beam problem, part was £30 or something, doesn't take to long to do and its all self explanitory once your in there.

2. Could be a wire rubbing where is goes through the bulkhead, however may only touch sometimes, hence the intermitent problem.

3. Are you going fast enough for the gear?

4. Is the battery still under the passenger seat in the TD5? if so, and its anything like mine there will be plently of space for another one, you may need to know up a wee shelf/bracket but it would be fine

As for the gearing issue, I'm not nearing stalling point or anything.

I good example of this would be if I was travelling @ 70mph down a motorway but have to slow down in a 50 zone, still in fifth gear. This would deffinatley cause the odd vibration, even if I slip it into forth the sound would still be present. The only way to stop it is to accelerate hard or to drop the clutch???

2. sorry can't help you. my 2002 td5 doesn't have this option

3. when you back of the gas, does it always happen even on flat road or is it down a slight incline. does goes away when you dip the clutch? i tink it's the driveline pushing on the gear box. check flywheel if you really tink this is really annoying or overhaul clutch. slight vibration is ok, might be your wheel alignment too.

4. the battery box is under the passenger seat. it will happily take 2 optimas or the standard 100amp factory battery and 1 optima. the 2nd option is a lil squeeze, but it's possible.

when i flick on the turning indicator the trailer light blinks briefly and then stays off. i believe it's normal. if trailer attatch it should be illuminated.

i think it's stated in the owners manual.

This will always happen, flat or incline. & the noise does go away once the clutch is dipped.

It would make sense about the flywheel, but why does it only happen in forth & fifth gear ???

Anyway, I dropped the landy in to my local garage to have a squeeky belt replaced. Simple enough job I thought......... Then later get a phone call saying that my head gasket has gone and this is the cause of the squeek. Hmmm, gutted!! Least its under GTee. Still there were no signs of gasket problems altho I'm fairly new to diesels.

I'll keep you posted on the flywheel issue as soon as I get her back. It feels like a member of my family is in hospital. Must find out what visiting hours are

Fromyour description of the odd sound when in fourth or fifth I have the same thing on my 2000 110 CSW. Clearly no help to you, but interested to find out what the cause is!

Yes thats a standard thing the wee blimp from the trailer light, if there is a trailer connected I think it may flash with the indicators, not something I was paying attention to the last time I was towing, more trying not to go over 25mph because it was bouncing with every bump I went over! Moral of that tow: carry balast.

Mine does the same but only on one side!!!!!!!!! Can't remember which side now not that it matters.
