Hello from Sweden!

Hello!

I am 26 years old and from Sweden! I was born in Stockholm but recently moved away from the big city and now live southward.

Just a couple of days ago I bought my first Land Rover and frankly my first car ever (long overdue I suppose). It is a Range Rover P38A 4.6 HSE -99. I am super excited about the car and I hope I can stick with it for a long time because I love the look of it (the best looking range rover if you ask me) and the drive and comfort is great.

It only had two owners before me (technically three because the first owner registered it onto his wife before they sold it) and it seems to me to be in a mostly great condition. It has had the electric air suspension converted to regular suspension and is currently on summer tyres, but I got a set of winter tyres on another set of original alloys as well. Here are some photos:







Having only owned the car since Monday, I'm proud to say that I have, with a lot of help from my little brother, already mended a problem with it!

Yesterday after removing a battery charger that was lying in the engine bay when I bought it (we first had to disconnect the battery because it was permanently mounted to it), the key fob remote locking/unlocking stopped working, which led me to try the drivers door lock and guess what, nothing. I went to bed a little discouraged.

Today I found the battery was discharged (hence the battery charger I suppose) and the car wouldn't start and many warning messages were displayed in the dash. I got very nervous and many poos were shat. After using jumper cables the car started like nothing and no error messages appeared. So we moved on to disassembling the drivers door card, and found that the metal wire leading to the lock had jumped off the hook. We put it back in and voilá! Both the regular door lock and the key fob remote door lock now works.

This leads me on to a few issues I have found with it:

• The heated front screen does not seem to be working (the rear one does).
• The heater/ac only blows air to the windscreen no matter what setting I pick.
• The seat heating does not seem to be working for either of the seats.
• The small treble speakers on the front doors do not seem to be working or has a very subtle output.
• There is a slight steering wheel play but I will try to make a steering box adjustment. (I need to get british sizes of allen keys first though because the ones I have don't seem to fit.)

Some cosmetical issues I have found:


I have already ordered a new cubby box lid as well as a new gas strut for it. A new armrest cap cover was also ordered.


This inner tailgate trim is cracked but I've ordered a new one. For the record I also ordered new tailgate gas struts because the tailgate put a dent in my little brothers head while we were admiring the enormous boot.


This trim for the tailgate handle is cracked and will get a new one eventually.


I need new lug nuts because some of the ones I have really shame the car.

Among other things I also ordered a new original key fob case because the one I got is absolutely massacred.

After looking at the fuses under the passenger seat I found this loose cable lying on top of the becm. I've found it belongs to the seat airbag. Hopefully one of the previous owners only disconnected it because they had a child car seat installed or something, in which case I should check the dashboard airbag on the passengers side as well.

Hope you have lots of fun with it. It is in pretty good condition for the age, as I am sure you know.
Your car is one year older than mine and it is surprising (to me at least) to see another P38 that looks so pristine and clean under the bonnet.
How many miles has it done?

The car has done 210000 km. It was about 50000 more than my target mileage when looking for a car, but since it looked so well taken care of and of course because I liked it so much as well as the intention to keep it for as long as possible, I thought it wouldn't matter much.

Welcome aboard - they're a nice bus the P38 - provided you can deal with all the electronics

I'd consider putting it back on air too, when you can - they are soo much nicer

Welcome; my mate is moving to Sweden with his Swedish girlfriend after 20 years she has been here in Britain. This weekend in fact - Pauliström.
When I asked him about Land Rovers in Sweden he said you don't see many.
I was expecting him to say everyone has one because of the snow but apparently they are all chilled and just put winter tyres on their cars.
I was rather hoping for a good source of parts but there you go.

I think landrovers are very expensive in most Scandinavian countries. Probably because of import taxes designed to keep their domestic manufacturers in business.

Off topic but can you as a Swedish citizen confirm the following 'news' going the rounds on the net:
Recently the Swedish government warned their citizens to be prepared for a week without support from the government, and its also warning to expect up to 3 months of civil disturbance. It's not that long ago (Dec 2016) the the head of Sweden's military was warning his troops to be prepared for all out warfare, and there were worrying comments about the length of time they could keep it up for. Like, not long.

Is there any truth in this that you know of?

I was actually excited to try out the air suspension when I went to test drive it, so I was a little disappointed when the dealer told me it had been converted to coils. It would be fun to have it installed back again eventually, but I would have to order the entire kit. The box for the EAS compressor in the engine bay is empty.

Oh that's nice. Pauliström is about 109km away from where I live (Växjö).

I think the Land Rovers are only used by real off-road enthusiasts so you don't see them very often, but I know there's a person that lives not far from me that has two of them because I've seen them on his driveway. When it comes to the Range Rovers you only really see the newer models, but they are a pretty uncommon sight and it's mostly inner city posh people who drive them. I think the tax is pretty hefty for heavier vehicles too not to mention if you drive a diesel you will be burdened pretty hard by taxes. There's even talk of outright banning older diesel cars because of environmental talks.

The best place to get parts for Land Rovers in Sweden to my knowledge is https://www.bildelsbasen.se/. It is a site where various breakers list their parts for sale and you can order them directly through the website. I've found the selection for the P38 at least is pretty good but I find that you get better prices still if you order from the UK, despite the shipping costs.

I don't know if I've heard about the week without support from the government but maybe I've been living under a rock, but I do know there were some talks some year ago about how the military defence wouldn't be able to stand for longer than a few weeks, which I don't doubt to be true for a second. I think it is the Swedish public general understanding that the Swedish military is in a very dismantled state, but many don't seem very bothered about it. I think the common idea is that, "why would anybody want to invade Sweden?". But among the military there is a bunch of things that has gone downhill with my country in the past 20 years if you ask me. Healthcare, elderly care and the public school has suffered a lot.

i worked in Sweden for around 6 months in Algared near Hudiksvalle sorry for spelling, chap there had a defender he was building, but seemed that most of the guys were into American muscle cars, mind you it was the middle of bloody now where so maybe it was a local thing!

I spent an enjoyable 10 days in Stockholm and Uppsala in '98, everybody looked so fit and healthy! Was at the Karolinska Institute and the Swedish State Veterinary Lab; really beautiful scenery and people.
I didn't see any Land Rovers though.

There's a thing called "raggare" in Sweden which is sort of a remnant from the 50-60s when American cars and culture was really popular in Sweden. I never understood the appeal of American cars but there you go.

Oh boy, back in '98 I was only 7 years old! Stockholm is a beautiful city, especially during the summer, but I'm happy to be rid from there. It's unnecessarily busy for my taste, I'm no inner city person anyway.
