Well here I am and hello to everyone.
I Have just bought a Discovery 2 and as It has a few problems thought I would be wise to join Landyzone, having read a few posts and noticed the wealth of knowledge that's available here.

I live in Denbighshire North Wales and as I have said I have just bought myself a Land Rover Discovery 2 Td5 on an 04 2004 plate, its my third Land Rover, the first being a series 11 which I now wish i never sold, the only problem I ever had with it was a broken throttle cable which I fixed to get me home, with a few boot laces and routed them through the air conditioning system mounted just under the windscreen.
My second was an N reg Discovery 300 tdi, which I also have often wished I still had, as I didn't have any problems with that either, until someone threw a tree at it in high winds and squashed the front a bit.

So having spent the last few years wishing I had a Land Rover again, I splashed out on the current Disco, details mentioned before and yes this one has given me problems. The first is an erratic starting problem, that is erratic in as much that it will always start if you are starting it within 10 minuets of switching it off. otherwise you have to coax it to life and hope that the the battery holds out long enough but start it does, eventually. I have replaced the glow plugs having tested them and found all 4 to be dead. I also cleaned the oil from around the red plug at the ecu. When it starts it starts with some smoke out the back and i'm thinking that a replacement of the fuel injector harness is the next step, this seems to be the fix for similar threads I have read.
Disco has another problem which is a very nasty scrunching cogs grinding noise coming from the gearbox on selecting first second and third gears, otherwise fourth fifth and reverse are fine, there is also some unusual rumbling noises from low down under the car when travelling along at 40 to 50 mph could these problems be syncromesh and diff problems? any ideas before I start fixing? do you need more detail? Thanks again in advance, i'm new to forums in general not just this one so please be kind.

Hello and Welcome to the Loonyzone.

A few points i always recommend to a new D2 owner.

1) Find out what your EKA code is and know how to use it. Description is in the owners handbook, the EKA code should be on the security card.
2) Make sure you have at least 2 working fobs
3) Find someone local who has a nanocom and make friends with them.

apart from that, make sure all fluids have been changed within the specified times , if in doubt worth getting it done to make sure there is enough and it is good.

I would also suggest taking your post above and placing it in the Discovery section, with the disco 2 prefix, as it may get more people looking at it.

Finally do you have rave for it? ( workshop manual download)

Cheers

Thank you neilly i will re post as you suggest to be honest I thought someone would tell me that but i figured that the information i gave in introduce yourself would tell everyone as much as anyone would want to know about me.
Other than that the advice is welcome especially the EKA code and the keys I do only have one and that one the key is weak half way up so definitely good advice. I have scheduled a fluids and service time filters etc.

Nanocom? what is this please it sounds important if i have to make friends with someone for it.

And no I don't have Rave for my disco 2. I will be sure to look for it on here, soon I do have a Haynes but not convinced that it's the best source of workshop info.

Thanks again for the welcome to the Loonyzone ??? should I delete myself and run???

Hi Gwup.

Intro was good, normally people are shouted at to go and intro themselves, LOL. So you are starting off well.

Nanocom, is diagnostic kit to allow the user to review issues with the Disco. other suppliers are available Hawkeye , Lynx for example. I have nanocom and find it does what I need it to. Others have different thoughts. But they are not cheap, which is why i advise making friends with an owner of said equipment .

Spare key wise, you can get a rover 75 / 45 key , it is missing the passive immobiliser chip, but this is a small problem and they are a lot cheaper, then you will need a blank key blade to be cut and a nanaocom to program the car to accept the key fob code, all is very easy to do and the cheapest way to get a spare key.

Here is a link to a rave download, i hope it works OK for you. It has other landrover products in there as well , I cannot remember exactly which download is for the D2.
