Hi there this is my second post and i just want to say what a cracking LR this is.
Ive an 1998 5 door l series powered unit pics to follow.
I've had a few issues with it but have been resolved over the time I've had her

Annoying front end knock,
All front wishbones replaced, track rod ends and drop links fault still there so then replaced the antiroll bar bushes with larger 13mm headed bolts as the 10mm nuts nearly rusted altogether and knocking resolved.

Lack of power,
Boost increased slightly by actuator has helped but now power seemed to have dropped off again, think turbo is dying so going to get hold over a rover 25 turbo and mate with the LR exhaust housing to suit.

Annoying knock from engine bay,
This was by far the worst of my woes and was the most difficult to trace. I cable tied and tightened every thing in the engine bay i could find still the buzzing noise continued for over a year. Only until the other week i took the air box off to find there was a white plastic clip sitting on top of the gearbox which could not escape and at certain rpms would buzz now its relatively quiet yay !

Rear clunk when in reverse
For this i kind of knew it was going to be the old captive nut mounting for the rear subframe as justified by jacking the rear of the car up and prising the body to subframe to find stupid amounts of play. I have not had the time to sort it properly so I've welded the subframe to the chassis as a temp measure this was done about 10 months ago and its still holding up lol !

ABS fault light on
My brakes when i had the car were really soft so i bled all the brakes with fresh fluid after this the abs light went off so i assume there was some crap in the valve block never had an issue since.

Sunroof jammed
For this I've not even bothered repairing it so closed it down and sealed it with silicone bodge job.

Rear passenger door lock jammed
For this I've employed my trusty hammer and chisel took the door card off and smashed the lock assembly to bits so i can open the door and remove and replace the lock not a bad job and locks are relatively cheap and easy to get hold of.

MODS
I thought i would have a go at an evry mod so i picked up a 1k pot from maplins along with a 1k resistor fitted in series with the pot so fully open you get 2k which will not affect engine if you don't want to use mod for mot ect. Fitted it today and its incredible to how such a simple thing makes such a difference. It does kick out a little bit more smoke than usual but the torque and responsiveness of the engine is day and night.

The next move is to fit sdi injectors and possibly a gt1752 turbo and of course bigger brakes

Interesting write up. I've had 2 modulator 'go' on my L Series - 1st was original (I presume) 2nd was from scrappie. wonder if flushing the fluid would have sorted the first one!

Interesting, I had an L series a few years ago and the lack of power always annoyed me. I've seen others mention fitting a POT and resistor as a cheap alternative to a RON box. Is it basically the same thing?
The brakes were also poor but in my 04 face lifted they are great so would it be a simple job to fit face lifted brakes? I think the change to the brakes happened in 2000 or 2001

Grumpygel you'll never know now lol
! I think it's a must thing to do on any car when you buy it but it needed doing so I flushed it and as so happens it cured the fault light lol.

Alibro the pot mod works a treat and makes the engine much freer revving almost petrol engine like with an increase of about 25% power it's just a 1k pot with a 1k resistor connected to the feedback wires from the fuel pump crude but effective and it only costs about £1 to do. In std form these FL1's are underpowered. Now I really do need to upgrade the brakes !
