i am very new to the world of landrover discovery's , i have just bought myself a 1994 (L) disco , the one in my sig , i have just been reading a topic about diff lock or something but i have no clue as to what it is ? i havint yet been off roading any info on what it is and what it does ? ? i have seen the 4wd leaver an a diagram of how to use it but i avint used it yet , if i was to use 4wd just normally would i lock up the 4wd system ?

also , what series is it ? 200 300 ? i havint a clue ?

sorry for so many questions am just new :) hey use were all here at 1 point

thanks for any help xx

Basically, as well as a diff(erential) between your 2 back wheels you've also got one between front & rear axles. This allows the wheels to spin at different speeds when you go around corners. Off road, this isn't much use as the diff sends all the engine power to the wheel that's spinning - digging you deeper into the mud. By locking the diff you have equal power going to both axles, so if the rear wheels start to spin the front ones will (hopefully) still have some grip and pull you out of the sticky stuff.

PHEW :p

Hi paul,Gareth explained that in a lot less words than i could! Thats a 300tdi you`ve got there & if i`m not mistaken it`s an ES model which was top of the range at the time.Would`nt say no to one myself! mucky`un.

ye its a ES its nice am made up with it upto now like its got all leather an stuff there is only one thing ****in me off when i change in to second gear it crunches :(

thanks for your help oh ye, how do i no am in diff lock ? will it display on me dash ? haha am scared to touch anythiink incase i break it, i used to have a surf and it was nightmare

I would just like to throw my 2pence worth in if thats all right with everyone. When you do take the beast off-road and it starts to get a little bit of a challenge, now would be a good time to select the" low" gear option with the "diff lock" on. Thus giving you better control and traction before the sh!$ really hits the fan! (No point getting stuck if you can help it) Have a bit of a play with the different gear levers options to get a feel of what they do and to make sure that they work ok.

On my 200Tdi the diff lock light on the dash will light up when the diff lock is engaged.

Have fun!

soz for soundin like a total tool , but whats that and how do i do it ?

Hi again paul, sounds like your box may have some wear in it,you`ll have to see how it goes. That will be an R380 main box you have there, which will be linked to an LT230 transfer box.Yep you get a diff lock light on the dash.Only use it when you need to.Using it on dry solid roads wont do it any good & put extra wear on tyres.Move the lever left locks the diff in hi range, forward and left locks it in low range.mucky`un.

ok thanks mate , so whne am just drivin normally round the roads, were should the small gear stick be ?

down and right ? i shouldent of evan got a disco i no naff ll about them , soz to keep botherin ya but i need to no :)

Yep,down & right. You should have a label near the transfer lever that tells you about it.A common thing that people find when they try it out is that it wont select low or lock or even both. This means it aint been used in a long while & it`s seized.WD40 or oil & a bit of persuasion does the trick. You may even have to let the car roll along a foot or two to help it select.mucky`un.

thanks for all your help mate nice one , 1 other quick one , high and low range ? whats this ? and when should high be used and when should low be used ?

thats my last one now i wont ask you no more lol

You'll only use the Low range when: Desending a steep hill (engine will break for you), Rock crawling or when off-road at lowish speeds in 3rd gear. On tarmac leave it in High range unless you want to scream the boll$!ks off the car and only move at about 20mph.

Generally High range on the road, low range for off road, where you need much slower speeds, and the ability to climb steep hills, and just as importantly go down them safely! If towing a real heavy load, sometimes low range again. It basically gives you another gear box of much much lower gears.

generally freds that are nearly 2 years old have out lived their relevance and while open to more questions about the same subject more answers without the quesions is just supurrfecas...supurreelus..eh not needed and in some case such as this the original poster has ferked orf
