Heater unit moved under passenger seat?

Whilst connecting a battery to my new (first) Landy to try and get it started an almighty roar came from under the passenger seat.

Upon inspection realized the heater box is missing from engine bay and 2 pipes run into passenger seat.

Passenger seat has mesh type panel riveted on and air blows out into passenger foot-well.

I wondered why the battery mounts on pick up tub!!!

Tell me, is this a common thing or something that somebody has botched in? I thought the battery should be in there?

Rather annoyingly, flashing beacon lights on roof seem to be on same switch as both come on/off together?

I can see this being a nightmare when needing to demist the windscreen.

Haven't looked under passenger seat as yet, due to being seats from a van or similar ie - 2 passenger seats all one unit and bolted straight on.
 
You've got to wander what you'll find next! Can't see it doing much good demist wise as the air won't reach the windscreen
 
Is it actually the land rover heater or an alternative?

The land rover heater is notoriously bad BUT can be made so much better. I took mine to pieces and replaced the foam seals then sealed every joint everywhere with aluminium heater duct tape then insulated the heater box and replaced the matrix. It only cost me £30 for the matrix and £2-3 for the tape (the insulation was left over from doing the cab). Works great now.
 
Didnt get a chance to check as too busy trying to get engine going today. But will look tomorrow.

Its bloomin loud enough though - why would anybody want to listen to that. And no controls just immediate blasting air!
 
if its loud, it leads me to suspect it might be an auxiliary air blown diesel heater, somthing along the lines of a webasto. well worrh having as an additional heater but as you quite rightly guessed, not much cop at demisting.

are you certain the original heater ( a black box in the engine bay mounted to the top of the passengers footwell) has been removed?

Yep - ripped right out and 2 black heater pipes running through bulkhead via passenger footwell and into the metal under the seat. Yet again haven't had a chance to open up and look as been struggling with trying to figure out getting the thing started (SEE OTHER THREAD).
 
I've got one fitted to my 110, but all the kit is under the bonnet not in the cab as it sounds this one was!
 
Yeah, pics needed. I've not got around to fitting my Webasto but when it's starts up and shuts down, the fan is really noisy, so it may well be somthing like that. You can run and fit them in the cab as long as you are drawing air from outside for combustion, and venting the exhaust to outside. Can't see an issue with that. Be easier to fit in the engine bay though.
 
As above, it sounds like a lash up. I'd take it out and fit one from a scrappy. You might try looking around at BLRC in Saintfield for one. I'd also join the local club - very useful for parts and help! Google NI landrover club. They have an online forum at difflock.com, but you need to be a member to see the posts.

The one on my boat sounds just the same, bloody annoying!
Its not the fan noise that bugs me but the induction air as its drawn in.

Slight thread hijack, but we are waiting for pictures anyway.

I could never get mine to work properly when bench testing. It builds up slowly through the startup sequence. I can hear the whoosh as the diesel lights and can feel the heat. The diesel pump builds in speed, the heater gets hotter, the fan speed ramps up, then after about a minute it reaches full speed. The fan then stops for about a second and then it begins the shutdown sequence billowing out part burned heavy diesel smoke.

I opened it up, cleaned out all the soot and replaced the seals but it's just the same. I think it's detecting a flameout, even though the glow plug obviously works (as it's lighting). Really annoying!

I was talking to a diesel specialist guy on my street about it months ago, he said he would have a look when I get my test rig setup again. He said they are very sensitive to air bubbles in the fuel.
 
I would look at the flame sensor, if it doesnt detect a flame/heat it goes into shutdown.
I think some makes use the glow plug as the sensor once its up and running so some research needed.

Yeah, mine is the type that uses the glow plug as the sensor. I've done tons of research. The resistance readings for the glow plug are correct. The closest match I've found to my problem is that some boards have a fault where components short out and need replacing - which involves removing the board and all the protective covering that it has to resolder new components.

New boards/glows are very expensive. I would not mind so much if it were only one, but if I change one and then have to change the other, the cost will be crazy.
 
Have you tried gravity feeding the pump with fuel so no risk or air bubble, again I think the install has to be really bad for this to be a problem, the eberspacher site has install instructions
