heater matrix

i've got to replace the heater matrix on my series 3 and am toying with the idea of mounting one internally.any thoughts on why i shouldn't?
any thoughts about problems i may come up against?

do you mean a second heater blower unit , as the matrix is internal to the heater unit on S3 anyway, and you need it in there for defrosting the winscreen

no,i mean put the whole thing inside,i won't use a series one and i'll make up some ducting for defrosting.

The original Smiths heater was mounted in the cab (Hot water pipes and all),
So if you don't mind the the risk of scalding should there be a leak.

When i last drove a series 3 109 diesel I cut down a minivan heater assy and fitted it in the l/h rear wheel box real quick fit drilled holes in the side of the wheel box to let the air thru the matrix and used a couple of pipes from the demist vents one back into the footwell area and the other up the back to ademist vent screwed to the door frame aimed onto the rear screen. Worked well in conjunction with the standard front heater
In winter ran with the rad completely muffed. HTSH

found the answer on ebay,it's a clayton heater which was apparently for military vehicles used in harsh climates and it's only 5 miles from me.just got to hope i win it now.

the heater on my perkins engined Series 3 get's fairly toasty. its got no taps or obvious restrictions in the water lines from the engine, just two big bits of hose clagged on to the series 3 heater matrix, maybe if you removed the tap/valve and just left it hot all the time it would be a bit warmer??? course it could just be the perkins is running hotter than your v8.

dont know if you won the arctic heater but i bought the lro series 3 restoration portfolio yesterday and there is a section in it were they cut open the matrix box off a series 3 and plumbed together 2 matrix;s 1 from a 110 and 1 from the series 3 then put them in a box made up of the 2 original box;s it then lined up with all the screws and pipes and gave 50% heater increase looks worth a go anyone else tryed it????

i haven't won it yet but i'm determined i will!.i'm a little concerned about the size of it though.it fills the space between the front seats and is about 15" high.

it is becoming more common with the use of two identities for people selling to out bid the buyer then offer a second chance to buy at your highest bid .put a price in your head its worth to you and dont get dragged into a bidding war

Now sounds like a time for you to throw together a scrapyard special my friend. In the past, I ran a bodged box with a cavalier heater matrix, a mk1 fiesta matrix and two random fans which i believe were originally designed to go in a PC.. Got nice and toasty in there. It even masked the coldness coming from the gaps in my S3's body (before a mild resto) and because of the two fans being pretty quiet, it was quite a nice little unit with a fully variable speed. the fans could be adjusted anywhere between 4.3v (they stalled at 4.1) and 12v (rated maximum) - It wasn't the prettiest arrangement i've ever seen but fitted quite well with the rest of the S3's interior. It cost me like £9 to build, and at 12v moved like 150cfm of air which is enough

i'm hoping i don't win it now as i got 'auction fever',perhaps i should have thought about possible solutions first,won't be the first time i've screwed up and definitely won't be the last!

i've got one of those arctic heaters in my soft top, it,s roasting hot with it going. make sure if you win it you get all the ducting and air outlets with it,and the stop cock and pipe work to supply water from the engine. it is a rather big unit that sits between the front seats and the fan is quite noisy but i would not be without it(makes a nice arm rest as well until it gets hot)

it went for stupid money in the end and luckily i didn't win it,i've just got 2 mini heaters which i will cobble together.
