I have an auto Classic and yesterday it was stuck in first gear and revving like mad. Straight away I am thinking new gear box and an empty wallet.
Went on the Ashcroft site and It was suggested that It could be the governor and a rebuild would be required.
Went googling about and someone had had the same issue and it turned out to be a stuck kick down cable.
Checked mine and sure enough it was stuck out and not retracting I disconnected it and sprayed copious amounts of 3 in1 oil down the cable puling it in and out until it slid smoothly. Reconnected it and went for a drive, perfect gear changes and no more clunk from 1st to second. I think that it must have been like that for a long time and I have just got used to it. Well pleased.
