Head Gasket?

My 300tdi Defender suddenly lost power and stopped last night, had to be towed home by my bro in laws Freelander!

It cranks over, no clanking noises but pours diesel smoke from the vent on the wing and won't start.

The Cam belt is two weeks old, and the valves are moving, so I don't think that's the problem. The fuel timing was out and it is much smoother now. Maybe the extra power has popped something.

There is also puffing of smoke from the oil filler, I am hoping the head gasket has gone suddenly.

Looking to strip it down over the weekend, anything else to look at before I do, or do we all agree it's broken.
 
Took rocker cover off, 1 broken follower, and all the pushrods bent. Haven't got as far as taking the front cover off to see what happened to the two week old cam belt, but guessing the tensioner has backed off or something. Really annoying as I torqued everything up as per the Haynes.

Unless the new parts have failed, I must have messed it up.

Next question is how likely is there to be valve or piston damage? Or will it fix with just the obvious broken bits.

I guess the head needs to come off anyway to check it all over.

Off to do some searching, and pricing up. And maybe some more cider.

replace pushrods etc and set tappets and turn engine over by hand watching to see all valves open close smoothly ,if they do run engine if it sounds ok it should be
 
OEM Allmakes full kit with Dayco belt.

Until I get the housing off, no idea what's happened. The valves are still moving to a fashion, so maybe something's come loose and the belt slipped. All the torques were checked and the bolt came with thread lock on it.

Probably something stupid I missed. It's just weird it lasted 2 weeks before dying.

Ok just finished stripping it down.

It seems the stud holding the timing belt idler has backed off and the plate behind it cut into the cam belt and has knocked the crank timing out, bending all the pushrods and snapping a rocker.

I really thought I had tightened the stud in, but didn't put any stud lock on it. Should I have?

Going to order the parts tomorrow, and hopefully it will pull through!!

Yes, that could have been it. The nyloc nut is only on a couple of threads, maybe I tightened it down onto the pivot.

looking forward to getting it back on the road, the Evo 6 is a bit thirsty as an everyday driver!
 
Ok. Parts came yesterday. So spent a bit of time fitting a new cam belt, and putting the new pushrods and rocker in.

I have found what I did wrong. I managed to nip the Idler pulley up on the tensioner plate, and not fitted it into the circular cut out, so the belt had tracked off the back and shredded. Very annoyed with myself but hopefully it's going to be ok. Just need to resemble the front cover and radiator etc and try it out.

Fingers crossed.

i did say it was easy to do ,just tighten idler then ensure tensioners free to move
 
Back together and running, not tried up the road yet, but hopefully will be ok. No horrible noises but was a bit flat to rev up at first.
 
One week on, and it's running well. Started getting a touch rattly, so checked the tappets and all tight. I really thought they would slacken off as the new pushrods bedded in.

Next job to ply line the back......
