Head gasket and timing belt, what else

morning guys.
Hopefully doing the head gasket and timing belt on my 200tdi disco converted next week.
Is there anything else worth doing at same time?
I was thinking:
-water pump
-glow plugs
-both aux belts

Anything else?
Also any part recommendations for all of the above inc head and belt as will be going to paddocks so they will no doubt give britpart unless I say otherwise.

Check for any wetness in the timing case. No point in doing the crank or cam seals unless they're leaking, but, if they are...


I think if I had the head off, I'd do the stem seals though, but its probably a waste of time, as I think they go on a long time, and it is probably possible to do them with the head in place anyhow.
 
I'd suggest using new bolts - IME, its is not worth the "cost saving" - which will probably bite you later on
 
the bolts can be reused up to 5 times, Ive never used new ones ever, the cheap copy ones are ****s!
Tdi stem seals are notorious for coming off the valve stem and allowing oil past them, easy to do with head off.
Any britpart number with a G on the end is decent kit.
 
5 times - I would almost think that 5x the head coming off is probably ( in most cases) not far off the life span of the rest of the engine!
 
Change the roller and tensioner in addition to the belt, they will have done a lot of revolutions over the years
 
If I were you, I'd go for a full head gasket set and replace every gasket from the head up. Give the valves some TLC with a valve sucker and some grinding paste, replace stem seals and if possible, send the injectors off to a diesel specialist for a service.
 
I'm not sure I would bother with the injectors, but, as above, it does seem a prime time to do glow plugs.

Or even just to take out the old ones and put them back in!

How many miles has the engine done? It would be worth checking the valve guides as they can start to wear around 150,000 - The exhaust guides tend to go first. Certainly worth checking them because there is no point in refitting the head if you could end up with guide worn so much the prematurely wear the seals and the whole lot needs to come off again. Honestly I would at the very least do all the exhaust guides unless the engine is low miles but I assume not or you would not be doing what you are doing.

Another tip, if you replace your valve stem caps, don't use LR parts, the OE doesn't make them for them anymore and the new ones are like cheese. If you can put a mark in the edge of the cap with a hacksaw easily they are not hard enough.

I would also buy your parts from Turner Engineering.

I will do all gaskets. I have bought elring gasket.

Engine has done 70k

Head gone due to overheat from aux belt snapping.

Need to do hub cap seals also but think they have given me the inner seals but it's leaking on the outside of the wheel

70k? Oh - so it's a baby that had another 100k in it before it needed head off treatment.

I would just do the belt, tensioner and idler - do the HG if you want and the stem seals as it makes sense as they may have gone hard with age but I doubt anything else will even need touched unless it was very badly mistreated.
