have i got abs???

was swoppin my springs at the weekend and noticed a wire goin into the top of each my front brake calipers?

would this suggest i got abs?

if so i dont think its workin.. no vibration from peddle like i have had with other cars with abs under heavy breaking..

or could it be a pad wear sensor?

or can someone just tel me what its for please....

if wire was going into top of swivel pin abs accompanied by valve block on passenger inner wing ,into caliper pad sensor

Unusual for a 1997 disco to have pad wear sensors and if you did only one caliper per axle would have the facility.

It could depend how good your tyres are for the ABS to kick in on normal roads, the only time my ABS functions is in the ice and snow the rest of the year nothing.

If I had brake assist on my disco just like the Honda I drive has then you feel the ABS but that's only with emergency stops when a "pillock" pulls out in front without looking.

If your Disco has ABS there'll be a prety little orange light come on when you turn the key, it goes out once you've reached about 5mph.

hmmmm... the plot thickens???

wire to both front calipers....
never noticed an orange light... does it have a piccy on it?

wire comes down from inner arch, down under bottom spring mount on axle, then loops up to caliper..it's protected by a black plastic corrugated covering tube.. so it might not be a wire in ot, and no its not the flexi brake pipe thats at the front on the spring ,this one is at the rear...

done a bit off road and wheels have locked up on ice, snow and mud...

Abs sensor signal wire? but it should go to the hub.

It's really very simple, if your car is fitted with ABS you 'll have an ABS pump in the passenger side of the engine bay next to the washer reservoir.

ICheck for a valve block on the inner passenger side under the bonnet, its a big lump that you can't miss. If you don't have one of these then it's more than likely you don't have abs... I have a 1998 300tdi gs and it doesn't have abs. You may have the wiring for the abs sensors though, remember that most discovery's have standard wiring looms put in which includes redundant wiring features...fog lights, rear lights and indicators in the upper light clusters, etc., but obviously they won't be wired into anything...after all what's the need?

Look on the bright side though, if you don't have abs...it's just one less thing to go wrong and need fixing!!

my error it does go into top of swivel... so must be abs sensor...

but got nothing on inner wing between washer bottle and air filter box.. there is a bracket but nothing mounted in it...

i'll stop worryin bout it now...

thanks for the info... (haynes manual is slightly less than useless on abs)..

Go wack ya brakes on at 30 mph on a closed/quiet road. If they lock up you ain't got it. If your brake pedal vibrates and judders then you got a.b.s. Simples!

I've got it,

my wheels dont lock up unless there's ice and snow are on the road, but it was difficult if impossable to lock up the wheels on a dry road in my old RR which didn't have abs.

have i got abs???
