Have I been ripped off??

Just got my bill in for two bits I had fabricated (as I don't have a metal folder).

Part 1, is a sheet of mild steel 2mm thick 900mm x 450mm with a single 90 degree bend in it and 8 bolt holes (it's a thing that goes on the rear tailgate to help carry gerry cans).

Part 2, is of 1mm aluminium sheet cut from 450 x 300mm rectangle jigsawed from a cardboard pattern i supplied with 4 folds (this is a fuel filler cover that sits inside tub).

How much? £158 plus vat.

Is this reasonable? Considering I could have bought the stuff, cut it myself and bought a folder all for less...

I was expecting about 40 quid tops

Ask em for a breakdown of costs. I think a full sheet of 2mm mild steel is about £30 so the 1/4 sheet you had will have cost £7.50 and the Ally about £10 max. An hours work @ £25PH = £42.50 So yes theyhave ripped you off. Hope you haven't paid for em yet. Didn't they give you an estimate when you asked for the parts to be made.

5 years ago the engineering company I worked for was charging 90 quid an hour but it was specialised stuff. I've just had prices quoted for "Meter Spanners" double ended open spanner 110mm long 40mm & 60mm AF 3mm plate, and brackets 40mmX60X90 wide with a big hole drilled in one leg, spanner and brackets £2.50 each. There so cheap I'm gonna get em to price up a steering guard I'm guessing they'll charge summat like 40 quid.

My Defender 90 tank guard prototype, Charlie (at a local fab shop) quoted me about £35 for cutting and bending to make them providing I have a decent batch quantity to keep a machine/man busy for a decent period of time.

Need to do some mods to the design and then I'll go an get some made - watch this space...

Pm me the details I've got some bits I need making up as well.

Sno secret.

Wot did yer decide on in the end. I ant done nuffink on my idea yet.

U-bolt clamp over jacking tube is a good un, clinch bolt over outrigger is OK (quick release fer cleaning), but worried about strength in the middle, and want to avoid bolting to main chassis rail like the ones from the usual places. Also thinking about a gravel shield incorporated to protect the fuel filler pipe and flimsy bracket that holds the entire RHS rear body panel in position.

Got some ideas, need to cut some more cardboard...

Still like my idea of a rockslider a bit lower than the tank and a plate from that to the main chassis rail but its how to fasten it to the chassis rail, thought of a bit of inch box coming backwards from the bolts on the centre cross member but dunno where to fasten the other end, other than a bit of angle or summat dropping down from the inside of the outrigger tube. The plate could then be stiffened in the middle with another bit of box.

i dunt think cardboard rock sliders will tek off, just a hunch ;)

The minute I read cardboard rock sliders, i just knew that when i turned the page the Hippo would come in for a slagging.
