I started the finishing stretch with the winch rebuild/fit by fitting the spool valve and hydraulic PTO. When I offered up the PTO it turns out that it doesn't fit at all. It fits the flange fine, but the casting is far too long so the PTO doesn't engage. The little dog clutch just falls right off the shaft. To be so close to the end of the job and have such a major problem is pretty gutting to be honest.

Does anyone have a dowty hydraulic PTO that they can measure the distance marked on the photo for me on? If I can get that dimension, I will cut the casting down to the correct size and TIG weld it back together. The winch came off a 101, so presumably the male part of the dog clutch sits further back on the 101 box and there is a different casting to suit. The picture of the part in the exploded diagram I found online seems to show it being much shorter.

I don't thnink that the hydraulic pipe will foul, it should be higher enough up to miss the brake drum completely but it's possible, looking at the diagram that the pump part is clocked round a few degrees which might be to miss the drum. I'm going to have to spend some time today carefully measuring, seeing where the selector fork rests in both of its positions etc. This is going to be difficult to get right though with the gearbox in situ which was why I was hoping someone might have one sitting around they could measure. It's not something I can really afford to get wrong.

hmmm, took loads of measurements today and partially dismantled the pump. It looks like I will need a complete new adaptor assembly. As well as cutting and re-welding the lloy casting, the shaft itself would need machining to allow the bearing to be moved along it's length. There are a couple of other possibilities, cutting and lengthening the clutch sleeve, or moving the gearbox flange, although I dont actually think that would be possible.

Pretty gutted. Ive spent a lot of time and money, easily enough money to have bought a brand new winch, and dont have anything to show for it except a bonny ornament on the front of the truck and slightly heavier steering.

Gill - I have stripped my Dowty Hydraulic system off my S3 and contemplating getting the reservoir tank from out of the wing. My s3 is ex-Coventry City Council bus depot and I believe it was sent out when a bus broke down, which judging from the condition was pretty rare. My grandfather bought it in 1989 to drive an external water pump to extract water from a ditch to feed to cattle, but in 1990 a new housing estate when in next door, meaning we got a new water pipe out in the lane:). So, the S3 was parked up until lock down. Would you have a web link to the diagram in your post above? My gearbox and engine are off to be rebuilt, but dunno if I should have the Dowty system checked and put back in. My father has said it worked very well and the hydraulic oil that I have taken out looks pretty clean still - well, after the first pint came out. Any diagrams or manuals would be really helpful. Stupidly, I cut a number of the hoses off as I got the rear tub off and it was not until I got to the tank did I realise that this system had been fitted. Thanks for any help.
 
I sold mine last year and I'm trying to find the photos I took for e-bay, no luck yet. Thinking back I'm not sure the adaptor was shorter, I think the "nose" that went into the box was longer.
Unless you plan to do a lot of winching I would turn it back into cash - these bits fetch good money, and buy someting you will use every week instead of once a decade. If the pics turn up I'll post them on here.
I took mine off and spent the money on a overdrive to go in its place - made the truck much nicer to drive and more economical, gets used every trip, I'd never go back to the PTO.
 
I had not thought of selling it. There is very little wear on any of it, so I might think of listing it. I will review whats its value might be. I have the pump, the transmission selector rod and the hydraulic switch with the tank in the wing. Thanks again
 
The trick is to sell it while there are still more people who want them that the supply, once most have fitted one, found out how heavy they are, how it affects the handling and how they neer use it more will come on the market and fewer will want them. Wanting a hydraulic winch is a phase that will pass and when it does prices will fall so convert it to readies. It would be interesting to chart the vlaue of hydraulic winches, capstans and overdrives, much hunch is overdrives will keep rising because they make the vehicles much nicer to drive and more economical and winches will flatten out or fall becuse they don't get much use outside a small minority who either farm, log or off road seriously.

If I took my winch off my 101 and all the gubbins to go with it I could sell it for what I paid for the complete vehicle!!...but I wont as I will use it...
 
Depends on whether you want to be the one storing it and lending it out or borrowing it and giving it back.

Only lend to my brother and 2 close friends who I trust, I got fed up with lending sh.it out and getting back either ages later or in worse condition than I lent it out in.
My sister in law was the worse for this, lent loads of camping bits over the years and nearly all has come back damaged - beds, tent, air mattresses. I don’t lend anymore.

having said that I have lent my father in law an SDS.... fingers crossed.
 
I'll fess up, it was years ago...I had a mate who kept coming round on his motor bike to "borrow" a fuse because his kept blowing them when he put the lights on. When he turned up the 4th time I'd had enough, it was a sunny day and we lived near the A30, so I pretended to fix somthing then told him to go for a run and not turn the lights on until he got up to 60, since the first 5 miles was a 30 limit I rekoned this would do. Didn't see him for weeks and he never asked to borrow a fuse again.
