Handbrake question

Hi all

My P39 passed it's MOT recently, however, I was told that the handbrake was not holding as it should. I thought that 4WD could not be tested on a rolling brake tester. Any thoughts?

Unless it is a four wheel rolling road they shouldn't. They should be tested on the road with a Tapley meter.

On the to do list along with fitting thermostat, rear air springs and bonnet cable. Just waiting on dry weather

I thought so, thanks. The MOT guy has a habit of charging for stupid things when the cars pass first time, like "had to grease a wheel bearing, i'll only take £25 for that" This time he charged me £30 because he had to use two bottles of diesel cleaner to get the emissions down

It will be due another MOT if you wait for dry weather. Never had to do a wheel bearing but are they not sealed? Two bottles to bring the emissions down? Are you sure you can trust this man?

He is talking bollocks there is no emission test on diesels only a smoke test. It has to be pretty bad to fail. If put in you would have to run the car for several days before there was any benefit. Injector cleaner does not work instantly. He is taking the ****.

Oh I remember greasing wheel bearings, when all cars were rear wheel drive the front wheels commonly had taper roller bearings, P38s dont have them, so he's a con artist I'd seriously consider calling trading standards

Thats why i always insist on been presant during the test, and get them to show me anything they fail/advise on, then I decide weather they do it or I do!
Did you get a receipt for what he claims to have done?

It also helps when you know more than the bloke doing the test. After all to be a tester these days you only need an NVQ and have spent twelve months sweeping the garage.

Cheers guy's, I have suspected that he was at it for a while. He charged me £200 for rear brake calipers for the Volvo's MOT a few months ago. I had to bleed the brakes again after a week, that's when I discovered that he fitted reconditioned parts that I could have got for £45 each. Had to take the car up to him the following week to get the brakes bled again. That's when he told me that the master cylinder was knackered. Questioned him about it, by saying that there were no bubbles in the reservoir and also questioned him about what he charged me for parts. Got a lame story. I did remind him that I used to be a mechanic. (was years ago mind you)

Anyway, was not going to use him again, but decided to take the Rangie to him for an MOT as he was not bad at letting me off with small faults. I acted dumb by saying I thought that diesels don't need an emission test, got a diatribe of ****e again

Can't quite remember but as far as i can remember when i did MOTs, you had to be time served with two years experience after that.
