Hi all,

Looking for some help.

I have just had my LR90 back from quickfit as i needed the brakes sorting quickly. Turns out they didnt do it very quickly anyway!!

I have had the drums/shoes/cylinders replaced on the back. Now ive got it back the fookin handbrake dosnt work. I was of the understanding that the handbrake locked the transmission and not the back shoes. That makes me think that some numpty has driven it with the handbrake on and now they have fooked something serious.

Can anyone help me understand what has gone on?

Thanks in advance for any info!

Hand brake is a separate drum assembly attached to the back of yer transfer box. Undo the 4 bolts that secure your rear prop to the drum housing (stubby 9/16 AF ring spanner is best). Big Philips screwdriver to remove securing screw (like normal drums) and tap off with #1 removal tool (or #2 if space is tight) and take a peek inside ;)

Thanks for that Take.

Does it have shoes like the bake brakes do? What do you think would have happened if they had driven it with the handbrake on? Ive got visions of gears being ripped to ****e..

All i know is that it worked before they had it. Now im trying to arm myself with info in case it is them that has fooked it.

They have adjusted the cable on it so when you pull it up it feels like its working but when its on a hill it does fook all. Can you tell me what is actually inside the handbrake drum? Does it have shoes or does it lock mechanically?

It is a standard sort of drum brake.
The law requires there to be such a BRAKE (secondary brake), not just a locking-up thing like P in an auto-box which pegs the output shaft with a ratchet device.

So .... as the law forbids a secondary brake to be held on by "stored pressure" such as compressed air or hydraulic fluid, it has to be mechanical, so the Landies use a mixture of cables and linkages.

And they all get stuck sometimes, both inside the drum, and outside it.

Your mission (if you choose to accept it) is to UNstick those cables and links, and to adjust the brake so it works.

Did some "technician" slacken off the handbrake cable to try and release the brake drums, then, when that didn't work, forgot about re-adjusting it?

if they did drive it when the HB was on, then the surface of the shoes may have glazed over from forced friction/heat. does that sound right? this will make the friction surface useless under normal operating conditions.

if it wur ****quick there's a better than evens chance . some **** slackened it off and then forgot to tell you that your handbrake was also fooked and needed replacing
