I have recently bought a 2012 Freelander 2 and everything seems spot on apart from the excesive pull needed on the hand brake to hold it from rolling, is this likely to be a cable issue or something else, the pads look fine and no binding etc and as newbie to the world of LR any help would be appreciated

I think the hand brake works on shoes not the brake pads. How many notches does it click before it holds, they are a bit odd to adjust

Hi j66shx
I would get the disc drum off and check inside for sticking expander, or adjuster knurled nut, I have just only yesterday changed my brake shoes because of bad adjustment of the hand brake and it squealing slightly. the dust build up in the drum was quite a lot, so if your FL is still on it's original shoes it may need cleaning out or changing.

You could always back off the front hand brake cable adjuster in the rear of the car, and adjust at each wheel through the hole used to access the knurled nut, adjust so it locks up then back the nut off until you just feel a little drag, then adjust the front cable, but personally I would investigate the disc drum inside.

My hand brake is now equal each side and holds on 4th notch with 3 more in reserve if I wanted to pull harder.

Thankyou both and didn't realise the handbrake worked from a drum which is obvious now, I am not a techy person so may take it to my local independant LR centre and ask them to look at it for me and at least that way if it isn't right it isn't my fault and I assume about an hours labour?
