Hand brake problem

Hi , I have a series 3 109 2.4 diesel . I have tried to adjust the hand brake so that the truck does not move when hand brake is on . The problem is , I have adjusted the square lug on the drum , the drum locks when brake applied , but I can still turn the prop shaft . When the truck is on the ground , it still moves even though the handbrake is applied . Has anyone got ant ideas on this prob . It passed an mot (surprisingly) with it like this , the mot bloke used a meter he put on the floor of the cab and the truck only just stopped .

Hi Slob . I can drive the landy while hand brake is on . Sorry , called it a truck out of habit from when I owned a toyota pickup .
 
after a bit of thought here ave come to the conclusion that either
A/ you dint got a series box on yer landy
B/ you're not explaining it very well
C/ yer trying yer best to wind us all up
 
I am not trying to wind you all up .
When hand brake applied and landy jacked up , ie rear wheels off the ground , the transmission hub drum does not turn . Therefore handbrake working and on good and tight . When landy on all four wheels and hand brake applied , it can still be driven . An 88" I had before , did not move when hand brake was applied . With this 109" , Drum is locked and the prop to rear diff can still turn . I still have drive to the rear wheels . and all wheel drive ie , 4x4 and 2x4 work fine . Just seems wiered how it was ok on the mot and nothing has changed on it . The link rods are still attached .

on a series g/box if the prop turns the drum has to turn, you can't have one locked and one turning.
or do you mean the drum turns aswell as the prop when you drive it?
in which case the brake isn't working. have you taken the drum off to check for oil on the shoes?
 
There is no oil in the drum . I got it the wrong way round . When the rear is off the road , The drum is locked with hand brake on , the prop dont turn , its the back wheels that I can turn with the car raised . When lowered to the ground . its as if the hand brake is not on .I have adjusted the square adjuster lug on the drum to fully tight (with hand brake off) and then turned it back about an 8th of a turn so I can turn the drum .
 
try tightning it up on the adjuster and then pull the lever up a few times. that should ensure the shoes are central.

the wheels will turn when its in the air because of the action of the diff
 
I will try that and also try and adjust the rods aswell . I have also put it on ebay as I am now looking for a family car .

Hi , I am sick and tires of cutting my self when I work on the landy . The last time when I was changing the rear spring , The ratchet slipped and I hit myself on the forehead full force and should have had a couple of stitches but stuck tape on it and waited for 2 days for the bleeding to stop . Full force ratchet on head , headache follows .lol
 
Rachet is working fine and a good heavy duty one . I was pulling the top bush for the leaf hangers in to the chassis part using a long bolt with a socket on the outside and a washer with the nut on the inside . The nut was making the washer concave and cutting in to it , so making the nut to the spacer thinner . The socket on the ratchet only had about 2mm to hold on to the nut . Thats when it slipped and cracked me a good one on the hair line of my forehead . :confused: Needless to say , I said " oh damn " or words to that effect . lol :D
 
I know but while tightening a nut with full force , you cant see how much room is left .
Injuring my self while working on cars is becoming a nightmare . Even when I sawed through my finger with a hacksaw while working on a speed boat when I had one .
 
I can honestly say , that was not me . But , I am a bit accident prome when working on cars . Think thats why I gave up working as a breakdown recovery driver . Didnt like to see the customers faint when they saw blood .
