Hi,
My handbrake is struggling to hold the vehicle. Brakes seem fine and ive adjusted the cable as much as i can.
Im thinking either the cables or the compensator have stretched.

Any ideas??

Cheers
Rob

Try changing the shoes, another owner had the same trouble a few days ago, tried every thing cleaning out the drums etc changed the shoes all sorted

I checked the shoes etc and they looked ok, which what made me think of the hand brake cable,

Thanks for the advice. will have another look .

The shoes can harden and glaze over with age. So I'd replace them myself with decent quality replacements (Delphi are good).
The cables are very long lasting, so it's unlikely to be those.
It's most likely to be the rear shoe assembly is corroded and not working correctly, in combination with glazed shoes.

However before adjusting the rear brakes, make sure the handbrake compensator is backed right off, or correct shoe adjustment can't take place.

A few months ago I checked the back brakes on my td4 because the handbrake came up to 7 notches (the handbrake holds ok at 6) having checked the back shoes they were fine so I copper greased them and refitted the drums . However when it came to adjusting the handbrake I found the adjuster was up to its max . Should I slacken the adjuster off then pump the breaks or is it enough just to release the hand brake leaver ? thanks, to me it looks as if my cables are stretched

The shoe auto adjuster can't work correctly, if the HB cables are pre-loading the shoes against the drum. It's correct to slacken the HB cables at the compensator, then either pump the brake pedal (engine running), or adjust them manually through the slot in the backplate. I always adjust them manually, as I find the auto-adjuster doesn't quite get the shoes as close to the drum as can be achieved by manual adjustment.

Thanks Nodge i was under the impression there would be enough slack with the hand brake in the "off " possition you learn something new everyday
