Hi,

I have recently noticed that under moderate to heavy braking there is a grinding noise coming from the brakes. I had the car serviced 3000 miles ago and there was a note that the front brake pads were at 2mm, but that they should last until the next service. I have also had the car MOT'd at the same place last month.

Does it sound like the pads have warn out completely now or is there some other cause for this noise?

Hello Chris. I am surprised that your garage assumed 2mm of pad thickness would last 12k miles. Don't go near the place again unless you sue them for negligence. Incidentally IIRC the usual minimum to release a vehicle for use is 3mm.

That is worrying then. I shall get some new pads asap. Can anyone recommend some?

I took it to a main dealer, Hunters (Bristol). Now I am worried what else they have missed. :(

There is definitely a lot to be said for main dealer servicing. (But not if ladies are present)
 
I thoroughly recommend Steve Hill Land Rovers in Flowers Hill Trading Estate, Brislington. Although we do a lot of work ourselves (or with the help of a friend who is a local mechanic), anything tricky or urgent goes to Steve. Tel: 01179 717444.

Changing brake pads is a fairly easy job, though. If you can change a wheel, you can do the brake pads. You could get the parts required at Christian Autos (26A Hanham Rd, Bristol, BS15 8PP or Tel: 0117 960 1443). Specify that you want OEM parts (Original equipment manufacterers, i.e. parts that are made by the same people who make LR "Genuine Parts" but not in a LR box). Then it's a DIY job that is well described in the Haine's Manual. An alternative to the Haine's manual is to download Land Rover's "RAVE" from The Green Oval - Home. The only tricky part is working out which pads go where are they are not identical. They are marked with RI/RO and LI/LO for right/left and inboard/outboard.

I avoid Hunters. The only good LR dealer in the area is MJ Fews Land Rover in Charfield, which is a 40 mile round trip for you (though the return journey is a nice test drive through Wickwar and similar villages).

Blippie, thanks for the advice. I will keep those number handy. Whats up with Hunters? Have you had a bad experience? I only went to them as I bought the car from them last year and then they gave me a load of vouchers for £100 off servicing. However I did call them for a quote to replace the front break pads and they didn't return my call. So I rang MJ Fews Land Rover, who were freindly enough but wanted £176! :eek:

So I thought I would have a go myself. I have ordered some EBC Green 6000 and a haynes manual. I will attempt this one sunny evening this week :)

Anything I should watch out for?

Thanks all for the advice. I have replaced the pads and thank god I did. One of them was about just less than 2mm. :eek:

So easy to do in the end.

I have a slight squeal but I'm sure thats just the pads bedding in.
