Hello,

Retired and out of date in some area's!

During working life as an engineer (agricultural) I worked for a multinational pesticide company in N Africa, Western Europe and Eastern Europe. I have driven Unimogs, G Wagons, A lot of tractors, and a medium truck. I was involved in the testing of 1960's tractors as a young person.

MY FL2 is a fine pristine and well maintained example, an 07 XS model with leather interior and 38K miles driven. I am obliged to sell this capable friend this spring, as my health has been nailed and this has forced a lifestyle change. Sod it!

A personal interest is the technical qualities of modern engine oil options. All of us are interested in maximising the life of that hugely expensive lump that powers our vehicles, and an appreciation of the technical subtleties between oils of different qualities aswell as choosing the appropriate grade specification will in the long term yield dividends.

The best oils reduce friction of moving parts, reduce engine temperature, search out and suspend engine combustion solids, and are slow to degrade and consequently do not loose their original quoted specification very quickly. Personally I use Castrol Edge 0W 30 A5/B5 for my Freelander 2 which includes PAO chemistry within its formulation. To accomodate a non DPF vehicle, I use an A5/B5 spec oil and replace it every 8K miles or 12 months, whichever sooner.
