Hi Everyone,

Hope all is well, I bought a Td4 ES Today in the Traditional Epsom Green.

86,000 Miles, plenty of service stamps, 2001 Y Reg, great condition for £3200.

Howevevr, the electric sunroof switch doesnt work, is there a common fix eg is it a simple switch problem in most instances?

Like a pillock I forgot to get the locking wheel nuts and there was no spare key. Land Rover dealer wants £140ish for new key, plip and re-programme - can an independent usually re-programme cheaper? I have seen generic blank fobs on Ebay for £10 or so.

Can the locking wheel nut keys be replaced even without the number from the owners handbook. I dont fancy drilling them off?

Likeiwse, the car didnt come with any radio coding, I presume I can get the code from the dealer?

The dealer described the car as an ES Premium, but as it has Rad/Cassette and CD Autochanger, and not the Becker system I think it must be a standard ES. Agreed?

.....and finally, I would lik to replace the leather gear knob but dealer wants £60...ouch. CAn anyone recommend a specilist or does anyone have a spare they want to sell?!

I hope we will have some quality motoring ahead of us. The car looks and drives beautifully, but I need to spend about a week getting it looking spot on!!
 
welcome to the money drain, you will find that the wires for the sun roof will have been disconected as the threads in the rails will be stripped and at £140 a pair it is the cheaper option

Ah, I see, A case of if it is broke, dont fix it?

I'm not really that fussed. Just would like everything working.

For the money I think its decent value. I accept that I might have to spend a bit on getting it sorted, the dealer is sorting a leaky injector seal before I collect it next Saturday. But hey, I could have gone and bought a Focus, or an Astra, or a Golf and been bored witless.
 
If the dealer wants your money then surely he needs to fix the sunroof, get a second key (your insurance may not pay out on a total theft loss if it goes missing when you cant provide the second key OR a good reason where it is), and pay for the locking wheel nut key.

Its a buyers market out there, especially for anything 4wd so the dealer should be keen to help.

Tomos right - it not your job to sort the defects out - maybe on a private sale but not dealer.

I would tot up with costs of the works - sunroof, key, locking wheel nuts, stero and ask for this off the price or they fix the problems. Ask a stealer to quote on the work and present that. Locking key is only a £10 from Rimmer bros - but if you don't know the code you are into a lot of hastle.

LR dealers will have a "master" key, so get them to take off the locking nuts and replace with a non LR set from halfrauds or a LR specialist.

Thanks - all good advice and I should have asked after the locking wheel nut key. It may well be in the car, it wasnt in the glovebox: are these normally stored with a set of steel bolts with the spare or under the boot floor?

With other makes of cars there is a firm in MK called Evo who can send you a new locking wheel nut key based on a picture.

I used to work in parts for a motor manufacturer and I could Kick myself for not remembering to check for these things! Maybe they will be with the car when I go back to pick it up.

I am thinking that with the sunroof that it has been disconnected as there is no clicking or any sign of life from the switch.

LR dealer wants £140 ish for new blade, plip and re-program - can an LR specialist or indeed any garage with the right system do this?

The socket for the locking nuts is most likely stored in the toolbox for the jack etc. Why would it be anywhere else?? :)
 
RE wheelnuts, yes dealer or indie will have the master so no biggy there. I got a new key and I think dealer is the only option, although top indie Roberts Country Vehicles (another plug but I really have had very good customer service from them) supplied and programmed the plip for half the cost of LR. As you, I like everything to work but mine has no sunroof so no tips from me. It will cost a few quid to get it how you want but thats half the fun it.
 
Re radio code, if the display reads Land Rover when you switch on, then a code is not set - I think? Maybe someone can verify this.
 
Fair enough. I dont know my code and seem to be able to disconnect and reconnect the battery without needing it - so must assume no code is set on mine. I'm sure I read somewhere that it will say code if it is set. Someone will know for defo.
 
Sunroof never ever worked on mine. I have a note from the dealer I bought it from saying that they would fix it at no cost any time I cared to take it back. But the dealer is one and a half hours away and he says that he would want it for a week at least, apparently all the trim needs to come out. I reckon it would not be worth doing in your £3k car.Lots of labour costs.
 
My radio (single CD, Double DIN size) has no code set and just comes on with radio station, no "land rover" displayed beforehand.

I still think that the dealer should be giving you a second key (working) within the deal.

When I bought my commercial, it should of come with a 3 month warranty, but the dealer said "that wont let you down, it only has 12,000 miles on it, its as new" so I said "put your money where your mouth is then, 12 month warranty or im walking"...........

12 month warranty given, and thats on a 04 plate.

Thanks all, all good stuff, I will check for the socket with the Jack. I am used to Renaults, where the spare steel wheel nuts are in a small plastic box and they are usually tossed away by the first owner the second they leave the forecourt!!

I negotiated £300 discount for the key and the sunroof, but I dont think the sunroof is worth the candle based on what everyone has said. I never open the one on my current car, its not like I am going to fit a .50 cal to the roof!!

The car comes with a three month warranty, but having dealt with these warranty companies loosely in the past I am fairly cynical about it and in any case have £500 per incident breakdown cover with the AA - that should cover everything bar the engine, IRD or box.

Anyone recommend a product for rstoring the leather seats. They are fantastically comfortable, but would just like to get them clean and maintain the leather.

It says "code enabled" when the unit is switched on. It is the rad/cass unit with a phillips multi under the seat. I take it this was standard in the ES? No biggie about the Code, I am sure If I trot along to the stealer they can look it up for a small rip off.

As I said, it is listed as an ES Premium, but as I understand it, the main difference between the ES and ES Premium is the BEcker Navigation System, which this car doesnt have.

If you purchased from a dealer take it back now this very momment get money back or get them to put right all that is not to your requirments.
If you purchased Private you on you own you should have checked every thing before handing over any cash.

Woolies are well known for leather restoration, also check out Frost restoration, though it may be Woolies kits they supply.
Congrats on your purchase, let us know how you get on with the key as I've got only 1 as well & don't fancy rip off dealer prices unless necessary.
