Just bought a gas soldering iron from Maplin currently on offer from 49.99 to 29.99.
Pro-Iroda Solderpro 70 Gas Soldering Iron Kit | Maplin

It has a tip for traditional soldering, a blow torch attachment for fine soldering, a heat shrink attachment and a hot cutting knife. No electric cable to get in the way. I now buy cable crimps and connectors without the plastic coating and use the fine torch for soldering and heat shrink for protection. It's made in the USA and is good quality. A must have tool I recon. See photo.

Eh....sorry to burst your bubble mate, but bought one a few weeks back in Aldi very similar.......£10. Works a treat too.

Ive got the maplin one, had it for years and its still doing what its supposed to but if i had the chance of another at a tenner i would defo take the tenner one as most if not all gas irons are a bit **** compared to a decent leccy one.

I have the Irodo. tis a bloody good iron. Though it does tend to burn the tips out a bit rapidly.

What flux are you using? I'd been using the plumbers' type for several years, and was moaning about how expensive new tips are. Mate pointed out my error. Booger.

I've had one for years, used to race model cars so needed them for when we didn't have a proper electricity supply. Actually we had a few, with different tips.

One of them we took the catalyst mesh out (the glowing bit in the picture) so the flame touched the tip, which gives a much hotter tip, though they don't last long, but we used to buy them in bulk!

Still got one in my racing kit but it's not been used for years, I always take a 12v one in the Landrover .. it's actually more reliable! ;)
