These only kick in when it's pretty cold on a FL1 TD4...

How does the circuitry get temperature information on start up to make the assessment of glow plug intervention?

The TD4 has a temp sensor on it. On American models it's even displayed in the clock.
We British peasants don't get that option.
The glow plugs run quite alot on a the TD4 to help with emisions, but you are correct, they kick in when it's cold.
Mike

That's what I'm trying to understand, MIKE, where is the temp sensor and what is it? Because it has to monitor temperature before the engine is started???

What's the ECT mate?
ECT = Engine Coolant Temperature sensor.
This is where the engine ECU (DCM) gets its coolant temperature information. The gauge also gets its information from this sensor, via the DCM.
The DCM will drive the glow plugs when needed, using temperature information from the ECT. The TD4 won't activate the glow plugs for pre-heat if the engine is hotter than about 12°C. Below that, the plugs are activated, for a progressively longer time, as temperature falls. The dash light illuminates with glow pre-heat.

The ECT is at the top of the engine. Near the top rad hose outlet.
The DCM knows what temperature the engine is, the moment the ignition is on. Cranking happens after ignition on, so knows to put the plugs on, and dash light too, if pre-heat is needed.
I believe @Nodge68 knows where it is. He was going to put a display on his dash.
Mike
The dash temperature display sensor is located behind the front bumper, when fitted. The dash temp display is independent of the engine DCM.
I've not got round to doing it on mine, due to the lack of T4 access.

Nice one!

I have an after market temperature thing... its possibly connected to the front bumper whossname...

It's telling me that it's 7 degrees outside and the car hasn't been run for 4 hours and the glow plugs aren't cutting in. The fuse is in order... so I guess I have to have a look at the relay??? I assume it's at the back of the engine compartment, the one at the back right above the fuse panel with a rubber cover?

Glow control is based on engine temperature, not air temperature. My glow plugs won't activate after 4 hours if the air temperature is ~7°C. Leave it over night and see what goes on then.
I think the glow light will not light, if the glow control relay is goosed. I'll look into that now. ;)

I can't get the manual to post but the pre-heat for the TD4 only commences below an engine temperature of 8°C.

Okay dokey...

I've had a look at the top rad hoses but can't see a sensor...

While I was having a peep at the relay I noticed a missing 15a fuse - any idea what it is?
