Gearstick rattle

Ok so I can live with this but if I can stop it all the better! Its my main gearstick rattles when the engines ticking over. After reading the Haynes manual I noticed there is a very small metal spring that slips into a slot at the gear ball at the base. Bloody things! Ive tried 3 now and all 3 dropped out after changing gear several times! Any suggestions?

I think its normal for it to rattle at tickover, My dads defender does it as well as the series.

Would a taller and tighter fitting gearstick gaiter help reduce the rattling effect?

Theres that and a rubber o-ring on mine...stopped the rattle and gear change feels nicer too

to also help reduce gearstick rattle it's worth spraying the pivot ball with motorcycle chain grease

I think it was a FRC1387 (for 6cyls but it went on my 4cyl) it fits in the groove round the bottom ball of the gearstick.
