im new to the landy seen this wkend, have heard the term fairey overdrive thrown about somewhere before, will do a bit re-search on it, just felt like the poor old girl was working to hard on teh drive back home
 
yeah bud, i just picked it up n friday night there, managed to haggle him down from £1000 to £600, the fella had been messedabout on ebay and was at the stage where he just wanted rid, got a spare set of wheels, van roof and sides and a pair of brand new doors in the deal aswell

just driving it home and it seemed to be screaming her head off if u dared go above 50, was just wondering if the disco 5 spd box would mate upto the engine for that bid extra performance and comfort :rolleyes:
 
It's very simple, don't go over 40! That's a hell of a price. I take it it has an MOT if you drove it home? it could be a real bargain. I've only had mine a couple of months. I had an old Disco and Range Rover P38 before and just bought he S3 as a weekend hobby. I know nothing about them but am learning too.
 
5 speed box is possible but not a straight fit. Think I'm right in saying you have to move the seatbox back and redo tunnel etc.
Easiest solution s overdrive, it just bolts on the back of the box (1/2 hour job) and increases gearing by 28% giving you a gear between each standard gear and a 5th when engaged in top.
You may need to cut a hole in the side of the gearbox tunnel for the lever if it hasn't already got one.
The general recommendation is not to use it in 1st or 2nd as too much torque can break them but I use mine in 2nd a lot especially when towing and not had a problem in 5 years.
If you buy one 2nd hand make sure it comes with the intermediate gear for the gearbox or you will have to get one as part of a refurb kit which are about 70 beer tokens.
They usually go for around 200 notes for a decent one but once bought and fitted you will never regret it.
 
yeah shes mot'd till sept, all the major welding jobs were done for the last mot and shes done 10 mile since, i originally wanted one as a toy but the more i look at her the more i just want to use her as a daily driver.

im gonna send away for the military paperwork and see if shes been upto anything cool during her time in service, if she has then il most likely keep her as a toy, tidy her up and leave her that way, if she hasnt got anything substantial in her history then the worlds my oyster and il be going to town on her over the coming years. either way il be keeping her, kinda warmed a bit to her as she was born the same year as myself.

think il be going down the road of 2/300tdi if im gonna go ahead and modify her, probably fit the fairey overdrive if shes staying original-ish as id still like to clock a few miles up in her
 
a five speed box can be fitted but isn't a simple bolt in job and can get expensive and time consuming

you can also get a high ratio transfer box which increases your high ratio by 28% (equals running in overdrive in all four gears) but leaves the low ratio as standard from the factory

or you can fit the overdrive in about an hour which works as a splitter plus gives you a fifth gear

and finally you can fit 3.54 diffs, not a difficult job but can take a good half day of effort/spannering
 
where can you get those extra high boxes from, are they expensive? can you fit an overdrive aswell ??
 
as said any 10 spline 3.54 diff will do ,early rrc where often first choice as not all series have oil fillers in rear diff pan and only early rrc and series diffs have fillers in diff casing so meaning if you have no filler in diff pan or diff housing you have to fit one or fill oil through stub axle ,fronts allways had oil filler in front diff pan
 
You may struggle to get a Fairey for £200, I spent a few months and finally gave up. Instead I bought a Rocky Mountain unit. These have some bounses, you can use it in all gears and low-ratio to get a medium ratio. However they are not cheap! They're pretty easy to fit, most difficult bit is drilling hole in the tunnel for the stick - probably same for a Fairey.

I had a few problems with the first unit but I have to say that the after-sales services from Martin Hogan at Rocky Mountain UK was brilliant. He got me a replacement unit next day and was incredibly helpful.

I used to run on 3.54 (Range Rover) diffs which will do a similar job but was a stuggle on hills as the jump from third to fourth as too much. now I can shift into 3 OD and fly up the pennine inclines at 40+mph whereas before I was constantly shifting between 3 and 4 every time I met a corner. Also the normal gearing up to third is good for fast-ish getaways whereas before it used to be a bit laborious.

Can now sit happily (if a little noisily) at 60-70 mph on the motorway or play with the trucks at 56mph (very relaxed) all day.

think for that money id have a 300tdi installed wi a 5spd box.

shame as it sounds like just what im looking for, nae very keen on the fairey overdrives either going by the reviews,

ach well, will just have to wait till the tdi lump comes along
