Yesterday I accidently started the landy in 1st gear with me foot not on the clutch. Didnt jump forward or anything though. Thought nothing of it. Took it out of gear and started lovely as normal.

Pumped my flat tyre up, and jumped in to drive off. I couldn't drive away as it wouldnt go in any gear with the engine on. Engine off it was fine. Clutch reseviour is full so not that. In the end I held the gear lever by 4th and revved the engine and it went in. Eventually I got all the gears back and drove home.

Changing from 1st-2nd now is a bit rattly which it never was before.

Any ideas what I might have done?

description isnt very good, box is most likely worn but worth checking to see if nut is tight on rear of mainshaft

When you say on the main shaft, is that the same one you would undo if you were to put an overdrive on? If so, I know where that nut is. If not, then I have no idea!!! lol

I didnt really get much chance to investigate the sound properly as I was just hoping I would make it home and not need the RAC as we were going out as soon as I got home!

thats the nut allright

what mine was doing was winding itself down the thread back onto the rear bearing housing and locking evrything up leaveing me with no gears and a twot to get into 1st & 2nd then on overrun or reverse it would lock up again

just put some threadlock on the bugger and tighten the livvid hell out of it and it should be allright :D:D

I took the inspection hatch of and the back plate and the nut can move a few mm before the locking tab on the washer stops it going anywhere. All was tight inc the big main cog. I checked the oil level and that was fine too. Mystery continues I'm affraid!
