The 80K horror stories relate to the earlier diesel with the GM box.
,gearbox same whine at same speed pitch changes with different speeds ,,,,as for the transfer ,try selecting low range then back to high never know might get better or worse .....
Thanks Keith, The wife is now whining because she is driving it and can hear it. Also commented that she thinks it has slipped a gear or struggled to change occasionally. The front diff has been changed, due to wading on salisbury plain and then not servicing the diff afterwards - you live and learn - but the rear diff’ is original.The 80K horror stories relate to the earlier diesel with the GM box.
Even so you may well be about to enter a world of pain. Whining is IMO more likely to come from Diffs or transfer box than the auto box or occasionally the wife
First step is to check all the oil levels.

Sorry, had a couple of pints. No relationship between changing the diff’ and the oil pump! What am i like?
