gearbox swap

mate as been offered a 98 diesel with a gearbox fault ( according to garage)
will a petrol gearbox fit?
i havent looked at car yet but dont know anything about freelanders always been series/def/ disco person.

Dont think the petrols had the same gearbox as the diesels

I would bet it's the IRD (transfer) box that's faulty and not the gearbox.
Gearbox=cheap secondhand.
IRD=loads of beer tokens exchange!! (£650ish) + usually the VCU needs refurb to stop the new IRD going bang, another £250....

Did mine early this year, well worth the hassle.
