Ok, this is a job I would have tackled a few years ago but I got a refund from the seller for part of it so I'm thinking of getting it done by local diesel specialist. The chaps name was given to me by the land rover restorer I've spoken to but he only does series land rovers so sends anything else to him....

My box has a syncro issue between 1st and 2nd
My steering box is leaking a bit (but not enough to fail MOT)
Clutch is juddery especially in low ratio.

I was going to get a full Ashcroft recon gearbox etc but this chap says he takes them out and sends them to a gearbox specialist in Blackpool that will strip it down, check every part and replace the parts that need replacing then replace all the seals and gaskets.

Price would be around £200+vat rather than £550+vat and I'd technically get something that is just as good....

He's charging me 8 hours labour @ £35ph and will fit the clutch for no extra if I buy one or pay him for one.

So, does this sound about right?

I've seen clutches on ebay for £50-£150..... Any ones to avoid/buy

Same with steering boxes.... Was quoted £160 from original chap (for the newer style steering box) but I've seen them for as little as £50 on Ebay.

Shame it's a bit too much of a job for me at the moment.

I've just gone for the whole toot... gearbox, transfer box, clutch and flywheel.... the work was done by one of their external fitters(Autoland 4x4)... excellent service, plus there's warranty on the parts... the drive home was much quieter, feels like new :)

Just looking for the best 0% balance transfer deal to spread the cost :-0
