Hi

I have just brought a series gearbox which I might rebuild as I want to learn how too. Just after some advice and possible a manual if anybody has got 1 spare. Where is the best place to buy parts too for the box. The prefix letter on the box is c what does that mean?????

Cheers steve

Haynes manual and the repair operations manual has a good section on the gearbox.

You can download the series 3 workshop manual here: pdf Land Rover Manuals | Landroverweb.com

Not sure on parts and things but I want to have a go on my spare gearbox at some point so good luck with it :)

Heres a thread on lr4x4 about the gearbox rebuild. I dont know if you have to be a member to see the pics but its a good thread that shows whats inside the box and also the parts he ordered to overhaul it:

Series III gearbox rebuild - Series Forum - LR4x4 - The Land Rover Forum

Wish you luck with it and remember to take loads of pictures :)

One of the magazines I think lro did a nice 3 part guide in 2013, I used that with the green bible ( plus james martin's expertise :D). Parts need careful consideration as non genuine can fail quickly. Buy genuine synchro springs and quality bearings, usual places like paddocks or craddock etc sell them.
You need loctite, copper slip, rubber or copper mallet, whitworth spanners and various sockets plus the mainshaft castle nut tool makes life easy.
Replace all bearings if you can and any gears or synchros that look worn. Distance piece is sensible to replace plus synchro springs, selector balls and all oil seals!
If you start replacing gears and so on, be prepared to do lots of precision endfloat measuring etc. James Martin is the expert though.
Good luck mate, I enjoyed rebuilding mine, but I didnt need any gears or synchros repacing so made it a bit simpler.

Do not forget my standing offer of castle nut tool. Free to loan but I do need a £20 deposit to ensure it comes back for someone else to use, postage is around £5.60

there are 4 suffix boxes a,b,c,d, they all very parts wise in the gear box,so you need to know what yours is to order parts
