Hi Guys and Gals

First post, be gentle! :)

Ive not long acquired a pretty tidy 96 300tdi disco, 73k miles and regularly serviced, one owner used for fishing, not even had a towbar. picked it up mid august, happy days!

Engine sweet, no knocks or funny sounds, fitted a new cam belt to be sure, fan belt squeaks a bit, i think the battery is old and drawing a lot of power to charge up.

I have a gearbox issue, i hope its not major, a few weeks back the gear stick sits to the left in between 1st and 2nd, i diagnosed this as the bias plate/springs. Still drove fine, until last sunday, i lost selection of a few gears 2nd gear i struggled with and 4th went too, now i can barely get 5th or reverse, and the others are tricky to find, especially 4th!

i beleive its an r380 box. And from my limited knowledge but google savvy looking i think its to do with the bias plate or the grub screw thats located inside the box?

We have a workshop here with plenty of tools and space to me and my dad can fix things between us pretty handily.

My question(s), am i right with the diagnosis of this/these problem(s)?

What parts are required to fix this?

I plan to drop the gearbox and fix it along with redoing the rear engine oil seal and clutch at the same time, to save having to pull it off again in the near future. Ive read that pulling the transfer box off separate makes the job easier.

Ive been told i need a heavy duty clutch and clutch fork for that area, are there any other parts i should get? i dont want to get half way into the job and find that im missing parts.

sorry for a lengthy post, i wanted a few pointers and want to get it running right again!

Cheers :D

Hi i'm a new member myself have a search on here for clutch and r380 threads there are many, if you are going to remove the box to fit clutch, maybe first remove the center consul and inspection panel you then can check the bias plate/springs before you remove the box, you'll have to take off the panel to remove the box to fit a clutch anyway, you might want to drain gearbox fluid and check for metalic sparkly bits. remove the boxes together, engine hoist through your removed gearbox panel seperate when on the floor, workshop manual might help

This is from RAVE for the Discovery II with the same gearbox as yours.
Procedure for setting the spring bias. Sometimes the gear lever rubs on the spring causing grooves on the lever as well

This thread shows the parts (post 10)
