Hello all,

I seem to be getting quite a lot of back lash in 2nd/3rd on acceleration up hill I get kangarooing and on overrun a nervous bouncing. It seems to be steadily getting worse. No difference whether in overdrive or not.

1st and 4th are fine, new engine and gearbox mounts recently. proshaft and diff seem ok.

Any ideas where to start looking, no expert on gearboxes!

Whilst looking I came across this Land Rover R380 Gearbox Overhaul Manual | Online Repair and Service Manual guide ... is Sir Stanley Unwin speaking to us from the grave?

thats a good translation:D bronze bush 2nd and 3rd gear run on would be my thought ,4th is input shaft and first is robust unless rear main shaft nut becomes loose ,the bushes come in two forms earlier 1 piece or later 2 piece ,they break up ,and thrust washers either end can wear too ,you should be able to get an idea by checking endfloat on both gears with box top off

Thank James,

Can I do that with the box in the motor then. Anyone got a diagram? Or part numbers to help me work out where in the parts book to look. I've not goot a clue what most of those words mean and the service manuals seem to regard the gearbox as something not to mess with...

Right, thanks James, I've had another look and think I unserstand where to look - on the mainshaft parts 267572-5, 50702-3, FRC4076

I'm hoping that this is a slowly deteriorating problem as I have to drive to Germany and back at Christmas and not likely to get time by then to do anything.

Cheers

D
