hi all
The gearbox that is in my series was reconditioned box but 6 months after instal it started sticking in 3 gear. The PO was going to remove and send back but because of family problems it got dumped into the back garden where it stayed for a few years till I got it.
I have now got it back on the road I have been looking at the gearbox it does stick in third but also jumps out of second and crunches when going 3 to second. I have found the main nut loose which I have tightened but there seems a lot of float on the mainshaft when changing gear anyone know if this is normal?

Ha who ever overhauled the gearbox had obviously wicked with a hammer it's fairly chewed up. I made a large socket fit and tightened to 100lbs thought that was the torque. But there is a huge movement when selecting gears.

If the bearing is shot that the output shaft is bolted through you'll still get loads of end-float. It's only a standard ball race and so doesn't offer much in the way of axial loading. Later gearboxes were improved by use of taper roller bearings.

Luckily it's not expensive for a complete gearbox set of bearings and bushes, only pain is getting the box out in the first place.

shaft actually moves when you change gear can you see it or does it just feel that way

Cheers for the replies guys I would have thought if the bearing had gone it would be noisey in all gears firs and fourth work perfect no noise, 2 is a crunch when gearing down and third seems to jump out but doesn't, but won't come out of gear until you push it in then it frees up. Prob going to have to take it out was hoping to get a couple of months out of it until I can get the bits for a 5 speed box conversion.

The output shaft on mine actually moves forwards and backwards when I change first-second without the engine running. I took the Overdrive off and tightened nut to 85LBs and that didn't solve the problem, the bearing still allows a few mm of fore - aft movement, however the gearbox is relatively quiet.

I'll be interested to see how you resolve your issues, keep us informed. :)

Sorry a James missed your post, yes you can see the shaft moving quite a lot I would guess 1/8 inch that's backwards and forwards in all forward gears engine not running foot on clutch.

Bearing could also be moving in the housing and housings have been known to spin in the casing also.
The bearings are C3 spec which is a large clearance between the ball and races as they run with oil splash lubrication at high speed so some movement but certainly not 1/8".
Does gearbox oil leak into transfer case?
