Help needed please,
My Range Rover 1998, 2.5 DSE has developed an auto gearbox fault which I think may be a tempreture sensor.
Today after a 30 mile driver the alarm in the cabin came on and a message on the display reading the following. GEARBOX OVAHEAT, and another message underneath telling me to refer to owners manual.
I checked transmission fluid and its lovely and red not a burnt brown and was only changed 6000 miles ago inc filter.
I switched car of and left it for 5 hours, put keys in igniton to start and still have the alarm beep and the over heating message on disply. I switched off again and left for 2 hours and same fault.
I am assuming its a sensor fault as the gearbox is not overheating and surely after 5 hours if it had off it would have cooled down. can anybody advise if it could be a sensor as I can't clear the display of the fault and can't use the menu for speed limiter of trip compute as the error message is over riding the system.
If it is the sensor where on the box is it located, is it easy / difficult and cost?
Thanks all for your assistance in advance,.

It Isn't on the box it's on the oil cooler on the V8 at least, where it is on the diesel Rave does not say as far as i can see..

Thanks guys, I have been informed that on the V8 you can access the sensor from the inside of the bonnet but the 2.5 Diesel oil cooler sensor is located behind the front bumper.
I am 99% sure it must be the sensor as the message is permanatly displayed even when box is stone cold.

Yes, check the wiring before you buy a sensor.

Hi Datatek,
I had a look underneath the front N'S and what seems to be the oil cooler are to electrical plugs I'm not sure if any of these two are for the gearbox sensor? I have been told that the sensor is only accessed by removing the front bumper first is this correct?. The two electrical connectors I saw, I detached and sprayed with electrical cleaner but the problem is still there.
The car had sat for 12 hours and I put keys in the ignition and straight away got the alarm and warning GEARBOX OVAHEAT, REFER TO USER MANUAL?
I called London Range Rover to day and roughtly quoted £45 for the sensor.

Hi datatek, yes i think your correct and i possibly was looking at the air con sensor, stupid me. Ok thanks for your kind assistance.

Whilst Im here and on about my gearbox sensor can anybody confirm if its an easy job, are there any special tools required. Also any clues on how to start removing the front bumper. Sorry to ask but Im a bit of a novice on some technical stuff.

You shouldn't need to remove the bumper. The oil cooler is quite accessable:)
