Hi, I know this is a common problem much talked about on forums but I was wondering if anyone could help as I struggled to find much on series landys:confused:?

My gearbox oil level drops slowly while the tranny box level rises. So the seal has gone between the shafts I imagine.

Is it safe to just leave it and top with oil/drain of oil? Seems a faff. The gearbox does seem very noisy but then again, its the only series I have ever driven! so can't compare.

Could I/should I hook up a return pipe from the tranny to gearbox filler plug? Or is that just TOO heath robinson even for a series landy? Anyone ever done this?

I can't afford the time to take the box out any time soon unfortunately. I guess I could buy a rebuilt one? How many hours is a gearbox swap do you suppose?

Any help greatly appreciated.:)
Cheers

Rear mainshaft seal is gone. I don't see why you can't just keep putting the oil back into the g/box. A return pipe seems a ghastly bodge but I don't really know why, unless the oil wouldnt flow back.

G/box swap is an easy day. Unless you hit seized seat box or mounting bolts then it could take days. Luckily, Ive never heard of rusted bolts on a series landy.

I took my box and fuel tank out the other day in about 4 hours I think, prop shafts found a sneaky for the front one use the FWH to move it round then lock them and pop into gear on xfer box so you can break them off

only when they are worn

I guess I was in denial on that point! Still, I'll just turn the radio up! Oh wait, that's fu**ed as well...........

I saw a rebuilt box and overdrive on ebay recently. It looked expensive at around £500 (my whole landrover wasn't far off that!) but I guess with the overdrives going for £350 ish on ebay, its not so bad perhaps? My wife would tear me a new one though :(

£500's about right for a recon and a bargain if the O/D is good anorl.....

Few years ago folk were weighing 'em in fer scrap and you could get one with known decent condition fer £20!

Paid 100 notes for my last one condition unknown

My gearbox oil migrates to the tranny box and as it is my daily driver I will have to pick my time to attend to it. I find draining excess from tranny box and topping up main gearbox every 3 to 4 weeks covers it. Any longer between top ups and the gearbox lets me know it needs oil by getting noisey and slower on gearchanges.

Thanks Divie, sounds very similar to my situation. I'll try filling/draining regularly.
Out of interest I picked up a Land Rover magazine in WHSmith yesterday and it had part 1 of 'Series Landy gearbox rebuilding guide' in it. Can't remember which mag it was sorry.

I'm trying to work out what to do about the whining coming from my drivetrain. I've just assumed it was the gear/tranny box but I guess it could be something else.

Can anyone help identify it from these symptoms? ;

Whines in 4th gear usually at about 25 mph getting louder up to about 35 then it goes away. When its whining loudly it goes away if I dip the clutch or if its just coasting in neutral.

Its very hard to tell where its coming from as its like an echo chamber inside a landy!

Does it sound like a gear/tranny box problem, maybe with the 4th gear? Otherwise the drivetrain is ok apart from a clunk when I release the throttle but I'm hoping that 2 new UJs will solve that perhaps. In all other gears below 25 mph it sounds ok with just a low background noise. I don't know whether it whines because its in 4th or because its going 25 mph to 35 mph?

Sorry if this is totally obvious, I'm just a bit clueless

hi there just a quickie; gbox is gonna come out in May, going to put a new clutch in.
Should i put a new pressure plate and bearing in and which manufacturer makes a decent clutch?
any help much appreciated

Tidy, will have one on standby just in case.

Picking up a second hand box with OD this weekend. Apparently no leaks and no whining. Fingers crossed.

I was very pleased to see stainless bolts in my seat box. I'm hoping that shouldn't be too much of a pig to remove as a result.

All I need now is a crane. Don't suppose anyone near Swansea has one I could borrow at some point for a box of beers?:beer2:

Cheers
Al
