Gearbox hell

Decided to change gearbox oil and filter today...without the aid of a ramp...also it was raining(heavy)....rushing I put everything back together and forgot to pre fill with oil...
My question is will it be ok to fill the gearbox with oil via the gearbox dipstick following as closely as possible "Rave" guidelines .
How much oil does an auto box on a 4.6l take?

That is how you are supposed to fill with oil. 4.5 litres to start with, then run engine at tickover, move gear lever through gate a few times, put in park and fill a small amount, dipping after each fill, until level is reached. On level ground of course.
