there is a whirring/grinding noise from the landy in 4th and 5th gear. the pitch and speed increase with acceleration. 1st and 2nd are fine and 3rd does it very very slightly.
as a side note i have new Uj's and have checked the levels of the fluid (axles, g/box, t/box) the t/box was low and i topped it up. the noise remains.
the reason i bring it up is i went green laning today and it sounds worse. far far worse. it does it everytime i go in the mud and water but gets a bit better with road us. also on the way home it felt like the brakes were on and landy was being held back. they weren't on. but thats how it felt.

any ideas?

have you the cross drilled transfer box gear? I'd be tempted to pull the cover and look at gearbox output shaft etc complete transfer box seal kit £10 or so
Also the centre dif free play is adjustable, sounds like a transfer box issue at a guess

not sure what this means if i'm honest. how can i find out? its the standard defender one i guess. ( ok done a search. i guess the cross drilled solves problems, but what is the problem it solves.
A cross drilled gear can be bought for 40-50quid off ebay. A full set of bearing is only £75, seals and Gastkets £20.)

its leaking a bit anyway so i think i will do this

both the front and rear shafts have a good 20-30degree of play in them. this seems alot to me! so i'll look into this also.

do you think that the problem is most likely in the tranfer box or gearbox? because its mainly 4th and 5th it point me towards the gearbox. surely if it was te transfer it would be in everything?!

The cross drilled gear is an input gear with 4 holes-allows the oil to lubricate the gearbox output splines( To reduce wear )

I'm wondering if the centre diff in transfer box is causing issues as you say off road causes more noise.
A disco transfer Box will bolt on, easily and £60 second hand.

Really someone needs to look at it with you

Hi Fanatic

How do you adjust the pay at the centre diff? I would love to be able to do that to minimise the transmission slack I've got.

Thanks

So i have a far better plan now. a friend will sell me his g/box and t/box from a disco he broke for £80. he assures me it ran fine when he scrapped the disco (rust). so if i get that then i can fit the whole lot one sunny afternoon and it will cover all bases! he will have to check if it a R380 or LT77 but he said it was attached to a 200tdi so i guess it should fit mine. (i have a 200tdi btw) did discos ever have LT77 boxes? if it is a R380 can i make it fit?

my 90 has done nearly 200,000 now so its no wonder its dying.
bizarrely this morning on the drive to work the noise has gone back to its normally grinding/whirring noise. no where near as loud as yesterday so i think it may be to do with the oil getting hot and thinning out too much. can you buy thicker oil for gearboxes like you can for engines?

thanks for your advice so far. i am terrified of taking apart t/box or g/box though so i think i'll swap them instead!

Discovery gearbox isn't a straight fit if it's a 200tdi lt'll be an lt77 but it's too long for a defender. You'll end up with the gear levers coming up thru the centre seat or cubby box if either is fitted.

The diff bearing adjustment is behind rear output on transfer box.

The lt77 as fitted to range rover classic etc did suffer 5 th gear problems-noted as either no 5th or horrible ticking noises(done one years ago)

If your saying 4th and 5th only=gearbox , if your saying off road causes noises=transfer box
But at that miles bit of both

The Discovery (short stick lt77) can not be swapped to a defender spec (long stick lt77) without stripping the box, this is because the selectors are different.

The disco transfer box is lt230, but has higher high ratio=better cruising, unless you have massive wheels

lt230 transfer box from defender or disco will fit, but disco one needs hand brake mod and better motorway cruising.
Defender long stick lt77 or strip the disco box if you don't want gear lever bodged in centre seat.

380 short bell housing box is another option
