Gearbox “sloppy” neutral

The gear lever in my Series 3 landy doesn’t self centre and so when in neutral, the gear lever rests all the way over to the right. This causes a rather irritating squeaking noise which I can’t help but think is metal rubbing on metal so would like to stop it. Both for my sanity and for the gearboxes’s health.

This may have something to do with the fact that sometimes I have to nudge the gear selector into the reverse gate a bit and then out again to find a forward gear.

Hope it’s just the gear selector but if anyone has any info I’d be happy to hear it!

Series 3 - Sloppy gear lever - quick fix

Investigating the reason for a sloppy gear lever, I found that the rubber/plastic bush that fits in a groove at the bottom tip of the gear lever (where it goes into the cups on the selector shaft) had split and fallen off - without the bush, the metal tip was fairly loose in the selector shaft...
