gear selector jamming

My wife reversed my 300tdi yesterday and when she stopped couldn't get it out of reverse. This morning with a clout she got it out but then found that when pulling the stick back for 2nd, 4th or reverse it jams into that gear and again has to be forced out. Going into 1st 3rd and 5th doesn't seem to be a problem but I haven't had a chance to drive it because she just managed to limp it home.
I've tried the selector with the engine off and with the engine running and it's the same.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Jono

could be a feww things but id start by removing consolo then gaiter then tin cover from top off gear box ,bias springs can wear grooves in lower gear lever and jam lever ,grooves can be welded up and weld ground smoothish ,if its not that report back

Theres a metal plate on the top of the gear box. I forget what its called. Their prone to snapping and jamming the gear stick. I'd check this before anything else. It is a consol out job.

Edit- couldn't type fast enough.what above said:)

very common bias plate or 1 of 2 plastic rings break off on gearbox end of the gear stick you can replace the whole of the gubbings for about £12 and a hours work dead easy done loads and will make you feel like you have a new box

Ok
I've managed to get the centre console out and the gearbox has a rubber cover which appears to be held shown by a pop riveted rim as shown in pics. The centre console has been out before and I suspect the pop rivets are not original. Do I have to drill these out or is there another edge beneath the carpet that I can get to to remove the whole cover in one piece?
With my working hours this is going to take some time!!

Rivets are standard I think. It is a once in a blue moon job. I redrilled mine and used self tappers as thats all I had at the time. I would re rivet though as it will help to stop water and noise coming in the cab.

Oops, forgot the mention the rivets. When I came across rivets for the first time I thought wtf do I do now! They drill out really easily. You can re-rivet once you've finished the job. A tool with a mixture of rivets will set you back around £15 off of ebay or buy one locally.

One thing not to forget, when you're putting it all back together don't forget to connect the electrics back up to the cig lighter otherwise you'll be cursing till the cows come home, especially if you use it as much as mine, not for lighting fags but for gadgets!

Failing that could be the nylon socket a bit deeper down in the gearbox, that the stick pivots in. Can wear/absorb oil and swell and get sticky when worn.

Ask me how i know :D

OK, I managed to drill the rivets out and take the ring and rubber shield off then found this metal box/cover.
I unscrewed the two screws but I'm damned if I can gfet the box offf. The screws won't come out as they appear to be long ones with a collar fixed onto their shaft so they won't pull out and I've tried manipulating it but there isn't the clearance between the gear box and transmission tunnel to get it out or is ther a chinese puzzle type path I have to follow?

screws dont come out of tin cover but do unscrew from gear box top ,you need to bend tunnel up enough to remove cover

Ah the brute force and ignorance method!! Good old Land Rover!!!.
I'll do that Sunday but looking at the bias plate which I believe is the plate below it seems to be in one piece so where next?
The resistance seems to be lower down the stick if that makes sense?

I will not be beaten!!!! keep saying it!!
