So, I was driving through town today and there was quite an alarming clankaly clanking sound. If I remember right, I dipped the clutch and the noise stopped. I pulled over, couldn't see anything amiss so carried on with where I was going.

It's occasionally been awkward getting into first even at a total standstill but now it grinds nearly every time - and I really don't want to strip my gears!

I've had a bit of a search on here - taken up the drivers floor and had a look. The tin cans have plenty of fluid and the slave seems to be operating without any leaks (here's a vid of me trying to press the clutch pedal with my had while filming...)

So, any ideas..?

PS: I noticed quite a lot of slack in the front prop with a metallic noise when it reaches its limit, is this normal? (It's at the end of the viddy...)

Drives fine once it's moving. Reverse seems to select fine. Sometimes first is fine too, just slots in - othertimes it's five seconds of PAIN!

and 2nd ,you have no synchro on first and second unless someones converted your box as a series 2/3 hybrid ,can you adjust clutch more ?pins and tube coming out of the side of bell housing can wear /twist reducing the amout clutch is released

Nah, no synchro. Second selects okay when moving and double de-clutching. But won't go in easily, all the time, at a standstill..

How where to adjust the clutch? On the nut coming down from the slave cylinder? Which way and how much..?

Thanks for your help James...!

yes and so that it lengthens but not so much that its pushing against clutch at rest, have a look at the tube were it enters bell housing whilst you press pedal too

Tried adjusting and it seems to be at the end of its adjustment, only two turns of the threaded bar into the linkage...

Really doesn't seem to be any play in the bar going in to the bell housing.

Just drove into town and thought she'd cured herself - but then had difficulty selecting first when coming out of the Co-op. And, I don't know if I'm being a bit paranoid but it sounds like there is excess rattling in second...

Beer now and worry about it the morning! :beer2:

Very occasionally I have a similar issue with my series 3, the gate for first and second seems to go AWOL but will select third, fourth and reverse fine, then once moving gear selection is fine. I'm afraid I can't help you with that the issue is but if you need a way to work around it then what I occasionally have to do is to drop the transfer box into neutral then select first (with no difficulty at all) and then re-engage hi range. Give it a try, it might save you having to pull away from the traffic lights in third because you can't find first or second! ;-)

And it's worth bleeding your slave cylinder - if it fixes the problem a new slave might be in order if the seal is letting air in.

Changed the gearbox oil (well, replaced the grey sludge that came out wiv nice clean EP) and all is well. Goes into 1st and second as easily as you like. And changed the transfer box and front diff "oils" while I was at it. Back diff tomorrow. 'orrible grey sludge out of all of them. Reckon I'll run it for a few hundrid miles and do it again...
