Hi there,

Im new to the forum so please forgive me.

Ive recently bought a landrover defender 300tdi 1997.
Im unsure on what gearbox oil to put in it, and i beleive its a r380 box. Is this true? Ive done lots of searches on the forum of what oil to put in and havent really come to a conclusion. i bought 3L of Automatic transmission fluid as the haynes manual stated and then signed up on this forum and i have read that Atf isnt suitable for my landy. Mtf94 oil is aparently better for the gearbox. Is this correct or am i ok with the Atf???

Many thanks. Josh:)

Mtf-94 is better but Id use what you have allready got unless they will exchange it for you.

ATF is the correct oil for the R380 for that year for some reason so use it

try the MTF94 oil next time

There are two trains of thought, ATF as it's thinner and the internal oil pump can fling it about easier, particularly from cold.

MTF as its heavier and sticks to the gears better, however it is known to cause slightly more hesitant shifts on higher milage boxes as the syncros are not as free to move.

I have ATF in my LT77 and R380 and I will stick with it.
