sorry but this may have been asked a few times but when i drive to work and pull up , put it into reverse i get a really strong smell of what i can describe as a gas smell, this has only just started to happen since i had 2 new tyres fitted on the rear of the car. any ideas as ive checked everything and i have no leaks that i can see.

Often the turning your head and twisting over your shoulder for reverse will cause a release of gas which could be the issue. Just squeezes it out of your body... another option may be laying of the beans for brekky ?

If it's a petrol leave it ticking over and walk round the back, if you get the smell it's most likely an emission problem, cat on it's way out, lambda probe etc.

the smell seems to be coming out of the blowers in the car, as it only does it when in reverse, and sorry i should have stated that it is a TD4 .
It was only after i had the tyres changed that this has started to happen.
Before that it was fine no problems at all. and this only happens when the engine is warm.

What tyres and where did you fit them..

if it was 2 tyres they should have gone on the BACK!!!!

Reverse the car then stop. Get out and see if you can locate the smell. Lift the bonnet and check in there too. Could be the smell of hot oil.

Only ever change all tyres at once!! The gas smell is more than likely the vcu joint overheating. It is probably thinking it is in 4wd all the time as it thinks the front wheels are slipping as they are now a smaller diameter than the rear!! MAd but true. If you knacker the VCU thats £250 for reconditioned part and could well take IRD or Diff with it. IRD about £1500.

I'm with ER1C, if you think about it the internal wind direction will change when reversing.. it could definitely be a waft from your pants :D
