Can't believe I'm finally "in"! Must have taken over a dozen go's at getting the charactors right to register.

I'm quite an old hand at Landrovers, but, have never messed with Free Wheeling Hubs.

I want to remove a set from a 1973 S3 Landrover SWB (single brake cylinder) and fit them to a 1984 S3, which has different (twin leading shoe) hubs/brakes/bearings etc. The outer detail of the hub seems the same.

Has anyone any experience of this, am I going to get bogged down in different spline detail, anyone got any advice?

Also, I don't have a clue how they come apart. Do you remove the small screws around the outer edge and remove the end plate?

Any advice would be most welcome! Thanks for reading.
 
You will more than likely run into 24 spline half shafts on the newer axles...
The freewheeling hubs come off just like the drive flanges. Just remove the ring of 9/16" (I beleive that is the size) bolts like you would the drive flanges and pull straight off. But unless someone has either upgraded to older axle to 24 splines or the post 1980 axle has been replaced with a 10 spline half shaft I think that you will not beable to do it. (that is unless of course you want to pull the halfshafts and replace the ends with the 10 splines off the old axle.) Good luck.
 
Thanks Lads, I'll confine myself to taking the FWH's off the breaker and cleaning them up for now. Just finished a mega brake job on the 84 SWB and I could do with a rest from it for a while. Had to cut every brake pipe at the slave cylinder connection! We do like road salt, don't we?
