1................. whats the big rubber thing on the bottom.

2.................. why is my filler neck leaking.

:(

Just come in from fitting my last set of shock absorber bushes on the off side rear and wondered why the tank was still wet when it hadnt rained today.
Had a poke about and noticed it was wet all the way to the top.
Seat out, box top off and its not wet round the sender and fuel line but was wet from the bend in the tank top, backwards.
Off with the fuel neck cover and the neck is wet, top to bottom. Time to order a new one me thinks. May as well do the breather and new jubilee clips as well.

Now I know some of the tanks I have been close up and personal with in the past have a big rubber gaiter on the bottom and mine obviously should have one but it aint. The diesel has cleaned it somewhat and revealed a home made version in half a tube of silicone. A right bleedin mess anorl.
Do I need a new tank as well.

Come on you lot. give us a clue. My MOTs due in a few weeks. Whats that rubber circle on the bottom of mi tank for and is it essential. Honest, I have no bleedin idea.

Guessing, since I don't have a series or know enough about them, just want one.
1 Vibration dampening.
2 Sweating in hot weather. Expanding vaporised fuel condensing when forced through a tiny gap in an old seal or join. Or just trapped moisture. Is it fuel?

Right. Had a look at the parts diagram. yeah, you are correct it shows a gaiter fitting with what looks like a seal as well (between gaiter and tank). Part numbers are 504233 (gaiter/ rubber), 504673 (seal)/ If our going to do the breather and main tube jubilee clips the Parts are: Breather tube, clip 546211, jubilee clip 603887. Main filler tube: jubilee clip CN100508. looks like someone's done a bodge job as you say. Those parts cost diddly it amazes me why people can't repair things like this properly. Hopefully that will seal everything, looks like yer fuel is leaking and creeping back up the filler assembly at hat point.

Checked Craddocks parts listings. 504233 is described as a "sponge" for top of fuel tank, all of £5.63 and 504673 is the gasket at £1.96, sure you can get these elsewhere if preferred. Once fitted I'd give the tank a good clean so that the MOT inspector has no reason to poke around looking for fuel leaks.

Cheers peeps. I have now ordered all the filler neck bits. Two pipes, 4 clips, neck seal and pipe sponge/ seal.

Now turning back to what I presume is the 'sump filter assembly".
Its a rubber disk on the underside of the tank about the size of a saucer.
Well as described, it's missing and has been smeared with silicone sealant that is now peeling off.
I can't seem to find the part number for that. Maybe it only comes pre fitted to a new tank ???

What you describe isn't shown on the parts diagram. My tank (petrol) doesn't have any kind of opening with a rubber seal on the underside. Could this be someone has dicked around with the tank, ie. possibly created a hole to flush it insitu? It doesn't sound right that there'd be such an opening on the bottom of a fuel tank; just a recipe for leaking eventually, which is what's in danger of happening by the description of the state of the silicone. Time for a new tank? You know she's worth it!

The foam seal is to protect the filler tube where it goes through the seat box to stop it damaging tank and to minimise water ingress when wading

I have seen them on other vehicles. I'll have a closer look tomorrow.

You know, you may have a point. It's not very diesel smelling.

Assuming you've got the tank out and in a dry place, if it hasn't dried out by now it's probably diesel. It'll lose its smell as the solvents evaporate, leaving behind an oily residue.
Always best to assume the worst where safety is concerned anyway, and there's no sense in giving the MOT man cause for concern.

It would seem its a military item and has a drain plug in the bottom. Very probably a petrol tank originally, now holding my diesel. Its not the only thing on him thats military.
Suppose it makes sense when transporting them about.
Still looking into it as there aint much info about on them. I now need to know if a normal one will replace a military one. Could be a can of worms.

Mmm... Interesting. I had a look underneath mine. It's got a recessed circular hole to accommodate a drain plug. I'd forgotten it had this. It's not got a gasket seal or cover. No details in the parts manual. I think it must come with the tank?
