Evening all,

I have just bought a 1998 300tdi defender with 73000 on the clock. Im chuffed to bits with it. It goes like s**t off a shovel, i had a 200tdi previously and it just doesnt compare power and speed wise. I know a 300tdi has a litttle more HP but the difference is more than a few HP in my opinion. The intercooler is standard, it still has egr(soon to be removed!), no silicone hoses. The only mod i can think of is that it doesnt have a cat, but as i understand some were built without cats. Today i got 0-60 in 14.4 seconds, and from looking around that is rare without any mods. The speed is great, but i am a bit concerned that the fuel pump may have been adjusted, and understand that adjusting the pump is not good for the engine in the long term. The other reason i think it may have been asjusted is becuase i only got 230 miles off a full tank, however 160 miles of this were on the motorway at 80 mph so that may have a bearing on it. So how will i know if its been adjusted? Or i am missing something that may have been moded? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers Oli

Sorry, im no expert on this! Not sure, which ever one you would adjust to improve performance! Or can they both be adjusted? Sorry im being so vauge.

The injection pump would have been tweaked for more fuel and the turbo may have been turned up.

You are right to be concerned as you don't know if it was a muppet that did the tweak and they may be pushing the engine beyond it's designed limits.

Can you see any signs that the waste gate actuator rod on the turbo has been turned (i.e. some of the thread cleaner than the rest) or does it look fairly evenly rusty and corroded in place? You could fit a boost gauge to see that the turbo is not off the scale, 1 bar boost on the 300. Same with the injection pump, any signs of recently disturbed screws, bolts etc?

The only real way to sort it out is to take the IP off and get it set to factory standards, a bit extreme. If you think it's really super fast and would be happier detuning it a little - I would be tempted unless I was sure the tweak was done properly. Look up the umpteen tweaking info pages and do the opposite, just a little to get it closer to the factory spec but still good.
